I have to say that Middle period Miles, with Wayne Shorter, is a period I only go back to for his sidemen and one or two good tunes. Miles' own playing in this "flurry of notes" style, where he basically just noodled around chromatically, was BORING to the point where I'd just skip to the sax solo. Not being a strong fan of Wayne Shorter that didn't help much, so I'd skip to the piano solo, but since Miles seemed to have instructed Hancock to play single note lines without chords, that was pretty boring too.....Miles had some high points - Birth of the Cool which was mainly remarkable for the arrangements and the band, Porgy and Bess and the other Gil Evans scores which were remarkable for the arrangements but did also have some telling trumpet solos. And the band with Ron Coleman, Hancock, Carter and Williams where some of the live gigs were special (though not all of them).
Miles had great sidemen and great arrangements, and he put together some ground breaking bands with major talent which he spotted early. But to my ears all these guys played better than he did, and I listen much more to their own bands - Cannonball, Hancock, Jarrett, Bill Evans, Coltrane and so on, where they were truly free to express themselves.
