very close to my take on those sessions and I've seen that happen IRL
very talented players are tapped by a highly respected musician for sessions
those players end up playing TO that musician and not WITH them, or each other for that matter, so there's no cohesion, feel, swing; they don't rock!
which is actually my objection to most classical pieces and 'big band' stuff, especially absent an accomplished conductor
with regards,
Follow Ups:
states, "We play a little bumpy, but it swings like a tiger." I detected no swinging on either CD. I was so hoping the second CD was going to be better after listening to the first CD, but I was letdown again.
I could guess before I looked it up the drummer in question was Han Bennink, then as now the premier drummer in the Netherlands and a foundational figure in the European jazz avant-garde. I think it is important to recognize that the Europeans in many cases have a very different aesthetic--one in which the give and take of "play" the moves towards a resolution that forms a coherent whole is not the method or the goal. Rather the purpose is "deconstruction" and decentering and the method is one of provocation. And Han is a provocateur of the first order, and one who is not afraid to play the fool or the comic foil if the occasion calls for it as anyone who has had the privilege of seeing the ICP can attest. I have heard Han many times in what are often called "out" settings, and none of these times would I call him an accompanist or a role player but always a protagonist.
This ain't swingin' to you?
very different. There are many music recommendations on the asylum, and I have only liked a few of them in the past.
I admit that I do not like free jazz like Ornette Coleman, and I am only beginning to collect jazz. I do like the Benny Golson LP pictured below.
To answer your question though, for me only, the you tube tune does not swing. It sounds more like a temporary solo, before the band gets back together. I'm glad you can enjoy it though.

Just starting....:it explains a lot. Come back in 3 years and re-read your posts.
the mellower side of music, whether it be rock, jazz, blues, bluegrass, or classical.
I was listening to America when my friends were listening to Hendrix. I like composers like Beethoven, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky, but I cannot take Bartok, Schoenberg, etc. I like acoustic blues like Mississippi John Hurt, but I don't listen to much electric Chicago blues. My favorite music is actually slack key guitar from Hawaii. However, don't get me wrong. I don't like Kenny G or other easy listening jazz.
I definitely like melody and improvisations on melody. I like group playing which has a lead player and backup, instead of everyone trying to play lead at the same time. That doesn't mean the lead instrument cannot change during the tune.
Your dislike of Bartok explains a lot as well. You like soft music. You don't necessarily like jazz.
Rick W above with a picture of a Benny Golson LP. I do like some jazz and have a decent collection so far(see small sample below). Heck, I even took my son to the Village Vanguard in New York and saw Javon Jackson playing the sax.
The original post was about my disappointment with the well advertised Sonny Rollins in Holland LP and CD box sets. The LP set is not cheap at $69, and fortunately, my son only spent $20 on the CD set. A lot of effort was done to produce this beautiful set, but for me, it was not what I was expecting. The recording caused some of my disappointment, and the other reasons I clearly stated in my posts.
You are correct in that I do prefer "soft" music, but not soft like Kenny G. Even Chet Baker is occasionally too soft for me, but I have a few of his records as well. It also depends on the time of day, and I don't think I am alone there. I listen mostly at late night due to family restrictions.
I feel like I am talking to a shrink, so it's time to stop the personal stuff. ;^)
Nice album covers. Another thought on this latest SR release, could Sonny have been tapping into the Avant Garde ?
a comical cover.
A stone(d) Jazz classic cover.
Excellent album. Just left a friend's place and he said he didn't like it. I told him to find it and play it again.
'soft' Monk? ... Dolphy 'lite'? ... maybe in the twilight zone!
Goin' Home is some great stuff btw
anyway, you certainly don't need therapy ... you need headphones!
and some ECM titles
and a winning Lotto ticket wouldn't hurt either

and played yet. I think they have some of the very best recordings and pressings, but I don't like a lot of the music. One of my ECM favorites is Jan Garbarek.
I find best recordings and pressings also with Mapleshade and Sheffield, but I am not thrilled with their artists and music. I do like a lot of the Audioquest material though.
Jan Garbarek is a tone machine! John Abercrombie on ECM is a revelation
Timeless is a all time fav of mine by John
an artist that I hold in high regard who I think you'd enjoy is multi instrumentalist Michael Urbaniak ... particularly on violin
this guy plays with fire!
regards,
Agreed! Love those ECM releases.
I first met Javon Jackson in 1991....back when he sounded like Joe Henderson. We laughed about it. Nice dude.....anyway, you like gentle jazz. You like an aspect of it. Like soft rock. Its an aspect of the music.

I tend to agree with Rick W, the YouTube sounds pretty darn swinging to me.
Ciao,
