Yes indeed there is and it is quite refreshing to be able to experience it. It is also occurring in Chicago with cross pollinization between the Windy City and Brooklyn. We have Ken Vandermark, Dave Rempis, Mars Williams, Jaimie Branch, Makya McCraven, Junius Paul, Issaiah Collier, Josh Berman, Keefe Jackson, Paul Gialorenzo, Hamid Drake, Roscoe Mitchell as well as ties to William Parker. Venues featuring these player include Elastic Arts, The Whistler, The Constellation, and The Hungry Brain. Support the music and lets hope for a speedy recovery post COVID. In the Madison, Wisc. area we have BlueStem Jazz supporting the scene with outdoor performances scheduled at the Garver Feed Mill. BlueStem Jazz operates as a not for profit organization assisting in promoting live jazz performance. All funds go directly to the performers. BlueStem ensures the performer's minimum is covered should there be a shortfall. They receive no funds and operate on a volunteer basis.
Support the music, the musicians and the venues.

Hiding in plain site and most often obscured by the tourist driven scene, New Orleans also has a thriving new music scene propped up almost solely by grass roots activism (i.e., no institutional support.) The scene here has developed strong connections with Chicago musicians from the Constellations/Hungry Brain/Elastic Arts orbit including frequent visitors Hamid Drake, Ken Vandermark, Dave Rempis, Mike Reed, and many others. This connection has been formalized by the semi-annual Instigation Festival in order to grow collaborations. Venerable free jazz titan and educator Edward "Kidd" Jordan has been an important colleague of William Parker for many years and an annual Vision Festival figure as well as a conduit to AACM musicians over the past 40 years. And prior to the disruptions of the previous administration New Orleans was a node in the international free improv/free jazz network attracting visits from leading Dutch, German, and Scandinavian (and even New York) musicians.
Thanks for sharing, some one enjoys Astral Spirits! Instigation Festival, hopefully Chicago pulls it off in a big way!
Hell yeah!
Yes, I have heard some of these people in New York. These remarkable artists have more of a following in Europe than here, I think. Cisco Bradley recently published a book on William Parker and has a book forthcoming about the Brooklyn Scene. In one way it is great to be able to hear these great musicians in small venues and talk to them between sets, but they desperately need an audience. Don
Got Cisco's book, but have not had time to crack it open. Several friends are really into it at the moment. For those interested in William Parker it is a worthy read. Met Cisco pre-COVID in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. Caught a Fred Anderson tribute at the Constellation featuring Toshinori Kondo, Tatsu Aoki, and Hamid Drake. Cisco joined us for that performance, remarkable.
Wicker Park is a fantastic neighborhood. Hope to get out to Chicago and will check out some music.
That would be great, maybe I'll bump into you. The hungry Brain, what a great vibe. I also would frequent The Beat Kitchen where Extraordinary Popular Delusions plays on Monday nights, Featuring Mars Williams, Jim Baker, Steve Hunt, and Brian Sandstrom. Ed Wilkerson sits in when Mars is unavailable.
Beat Kitchen Link, Thank-you kindly to the Chicago Reader and Howard Reich
Thanks. I have some records recorded at The Hungry Brain. I like the Chicago scene. Great musicians and great music.
