Said the tent was so large it even encompassed the jazz lite crowd. But thanks for the history lesson.

What do you mean by Jazz lite? It sounds a bit condescending aimed at the listener than the artists.
....blah, blah, blah.
this might sound like blasphemy but I find Aretha's voice strident
doesn't matter what she's 'belting out' she's always 'belting out'
it's the same reason gospel grinds my nerves, it's the difference between singing and shouting ... I don't like being shouted at to a music score

Me thinks your the one that's sassy.
Just curious... who do you think is not "lite" or solidly "in the tent"?
Regarding Areths's tone or stridency... Cant argue with what someone likes or dislikes. Just guessing you don't like live blue's and would also guess Etta James is off the menu? Sounds like you wouldn't like trumpets and saxophones as well?
One persons sassy is another persons soul. Nothing wrong with that. Not to get too deep here but great artists convey emotions. And Aretha does that like few others. So, I find it interesting to hear someone with so much to say emotionally in a jazz context where maybe a lot of artists are
known to offer up a compromised plate of what the audience "in the tent" wants to hear.
