Kevin has always sounded a little too 'slick' for my taste
extraordinarily accomplished, but 'slick', as are a lot of 'modern' players, like Lee Ritenour for instance
a contemporary of Benson's, that called him 'boss' quite often by playing accompaniment 'rhythm' and trading guitar licks was Phil Upchurch, who you could also find in the 'backline' playing upright, and killing it on bass too! trust me when I say that ain't easy and ain't isn't a word!

you bet! a 'monster' player [edit: and Berliner's Banana's Are Not Created Equal is a disc I need to replace ... someone borrowed it forever]a really talented bassist as well ... upright is HARD
I suppose I can only speak for myself though
my tendency is for really iffy intonation without frets, so I'd slide into notes ... then fake that it's my style ... I'm such a dork. those in the know would just punch me in the arm & grin
ah well, I'm fearless, just go for it!
best regards,

if you check a recording of his such as "Opening Night" you'll hear him play his ass off in a real jazz setting. Guys like Branford Marsalis, Marvin Smitty Smith, Buster Williams, Kenny Kirkland are on it.Other Eubanks recordings that display his "serious" jazz chops with excellent sidemen:
Turning Point
East West Time Line
Live At Bradley'sHe can play.

I just bought the Live At Bradley's after seeing your post.
I've almost been shamed into getting it too
still resisting
I had some contemporary jazz records by Eubanks. Would like to hear him in a traditional setting and that's a great little group. James Williams is great too!
did you ordered it or could you download it?
I found it on Ebay. I try to buy the physical disc whenever I can.
Agreed. I saw him at Bradley's in 1991. Rufus Reid was on bass. I forget who on drums. I remember asking him during a break while he was at the bar if he was going to return to the style on Opening Night. He was polite. He should have slapped me. But then came Turning Point, so maybe he was ahead of me. He moved on from GRP Records, so maybe that had something to do with it.
Saw that band at Koncept's Cultural Gallery, if you couldn't cut it you were just plain done.
Jay Leno was still yearning to be a guest on the Tonight Show.
"Once this was all Black Plasma and Imagination" -Michael McClure
I'll not short change him any further then, thanks for the recommendations
have you heard any Upchurch material?
oh, Merry Christmas before I forget again!

I guarantee that you've heard him
see link
regards,
