Lovecraft Country, a well meaning (though rather scattered) series on HBO offered
a fantastic segment dealing with the concept/belief of Afro Futurism in the most recent episode.
Part of it featured a short spoken word piece by Ra that fit the scene to perfection.
What a wonderful surprise!!!
The series always ends with Nina Simone's Sinnerman and has spoken word pieces in
each episode - James Baldwin, Gil Scott Heron, Janet league, Judy Garland, etc. as well as
a plethora of music encompassing some hundred years of American music.
I don't imagine so many people ever heard Sun Ra at the same time, most have no idea who
he is or what he accomplished and they never even heard a musical note from him.
It is SO in tune with Sun Ra.
Marvelous IMO.

Follow Ups:
They lost me after episode 3. I was very impressed with the first one because they recreated some very important photos from the civil rights era. I may go back and start over, maybe. That's very cool they played Sun Ra.

The 1984 vinyl album 'Celestial Love' has been re-issued on CD in 2020.
Thanks! for sharing.
Sun Ra was the only being from Saturn that lived on Planet Earth (born in Birmingham Alabama).
Yes, the music is my favorite thing on that show.
Great tip on the Sun Ra.
No HBO here, but plenty of Sun Ra on vinyl. Good prompt to spin some Sonny.
Thanks.
Interesting. Thanks.
And, as you point out, the music can be pretty inspired. I too am surprised by the broadness of it all, but I'm willing to see where they go with it. Certainly looks to require an attention span.

I tried to like Lovecraft Country but dismissed it because, as you say, it seemed scattered ... maybe I should be more patient and try again
regards,
One of the best episodes so far was mostly in Korean, subtitled in English.
I watched the recent episode Monday, though it debuted Sunday.
If it was a great series I'd be anticipating each episode, ready to watch.
My wife gave up after episode dos.
They seem to have bit off more than they can chew, so to speak.
Great cast and acting, great sets, disjointed writing.
The spoken word "interludes" are marvelous, poetic flowers.

they gave their audience some Sun Ra love so I'm going back in
thanks Musetap!
best regards,
might have to watch this series-
Love Sun Ra!
Happy Listening
