60th Anniversary tomorrow. There will be releases to celebrate his debut album as a leader.
Follow Ups:
Ethan Hein explains why "Giant Steps" was in some sense a "dead end" in jazz, and it was Coltrane's genius to create it in the first place and then understand it as a dead end and move on in to a deeper musical understanding--a concept that "jazz bros" to this day still haven't picked up on.
Excellent article! We Jazz Hounds tend to forget Coltrane's playing speed at times.
For me this has always been THE tune to suggest when you're jamming with new guys!
as much as some others are imperative at times, Giant Steps always works.
I will venture to say it is the one LP where there's consistent joy in his sound.
Later recordings there's much going on but less that sound of joy.
Thanks for the heads up!!!

Sublime details in Coltrane's playing.
