No musicians I know have canonized him.
He was on Bill Maher's show last night speaking about the political/social scene now, not music. Gotta say, I found his rap to be VERY insightful, knowledgeable and intelligent. I was impressed and so was Maher.

Wynton Marsalis is a GREAT trumpet player. Not many have ever been better. His music is a different story. I prefer many others but he is a tremendous Trumpet player.
And when all is said and done I'd still rather listen to Mr. Bowie play AND talk.

Didn't Lester say about Wynton, "With his chops and my brain . . ."
I may prefer to hear Lester talk! Wynton really is a remarkable trumpet player. He has so much music out there that its easy to find a lot not to like. His solo on black coded from the underground is majestic. I don't consider myself a big fan but he has some things that are fantastic and a lot more stuff that I have no interest in.
He is very smart. No question about that and he has a very strong grasp of history. Not my favorite musician but his Septet records have grown on me. I have had some for years but didn't think much of them. As I went back to them, I found the arrangements to be very good. Not a fan of his LCJO arrangements. Too much going on. Did you read the book Blue The Murder of Jazz? It was good.I didn't like the Ken Burns Jazz documentary. The Country documentary was much better and I am not much of a county music fan.
