I first heard David Sanborn at a James Taylor concert years ago ('80's). He did a killer solo on "How Sweet It Is"...standing ovation. Of course he's become a star In his own right now but his "smooth" jazz just never did it for me. However, if you listen closely you can still hear his blues influences...ie, David 'fathead" Newman, Hank Crawford etc.
Nice video:
Follow Ups:
David is a very nice guy and I've always loved his sound. That's what attracted me to his playing in Butterfield's band. Even just playing horn parts in that band his sound was striking and unique.
He's made an effort to increase his jazz vocabulary, but I don't think he'll ever be a hard core jazz musician.
was always absolutely striking.
Still is.
I've always loved his sound but have almost no tolerance at all for his music.
He was (ready?) INSTRUMENTAL to the glory and success of Night Music.

Which I can't really get into. But I'll never forget that live performance with JT's great band. His sound was awesome!
