Dead at 88. Good long run. Got to see him once or twice live. Thanks for some great music Mr. Cole. RIP

Follow Ups:
Saw him about 15 years ago at the, now closed, Jazz Factory in Louisville. Still have a CD he signed for me. Wonderful singer. Nice man. A great loss.

I saw him last Sept. at the Chicago Jazz Festival, and sadly he was in noticeable decline by that point--his son was really the focal point of the set.
We saw him maybe two years ago at Yoshi's. Although he was clearly somewhat diminished,
(his hands seemed terribly arthritic, but he still played well) the set was incredibly moving. At the end he stood up from the piano and gave an absolutely devastating rendition of "Going Down Slow," which seemed entirely apt.
One of my jazz heroes, New Orleans free jazz saxophonist Edward "Kidd" Jordan--who on the surface would seem to have little in common with Freddie Cole--has been singing the tag line to that blues "I done had my fun/if I don't get well no more" as of late. "Goin Down Slow" must be the aging jazzman's lament.
