I'm mystified why Aldana hasn't become better known. I hope it's not that she isn't taken seriously because she's female? Not saying that has anything to do with this forum, but just a general speculation?
I think she's arguably as good as anyone playing today.
I think people seriously into jazz aren't likely to dismiss female musicians, so I doubt that's a problem for her.
As good as anybody around nowadays? Wouldn't go that far, but she is a VERY fine player.
I wouldn't go any where near that far. She has plenty of competition. There are lots of players out there young and old.
Shorter, Bergonzi, Lovano, Garzone, David Sanchez, Redman, Walt Weiskopf, Liebman, Seamus Blake, Potter, Marcus Strickland, Ravi Coltrane, Adam Kolker, Mark Turner, Walter Smith III, Ted Nash (I've heard what he's capable of on tenor) -- just to mention a few tenor players around now.
We all have our own ears/preferences. Some may feel Aldana is equal to or even better than the tenor players I listed. I'm not there, at least not yet. But I'm happy to learn about an excellent player I was not hip to.
Winner of the T. Monk 2002 saxophone competition. For good reason.
Melissa Aldana won the competition a couple of years ago..... I love Seamus Blake.... been a huge fan since he first came up with Chris Potter and Eric Alexander in the late 80's early 90's. I saw Seamus in '91 with Eddie Henderson....Eddie called him the double dick dog..... he loved him.

I don't know. I had never heard the term before of since but Eddie Henderson was gushing over Seamus..... Maybe having two is better than having one! I had seen them at Visiones and then ran into Henderson that night at Bradleys with Gary Bartz. We were at the bar. A real treat to hear Eddie Henderson tell stories.

Adrian Monk.
I fiddled with my reed for 2 hours.
No one else came close...
I bought her first cd about 6-7 years ago. She is a excellent. Won the monk competition!
