Just saw some Altec Iconic boxes in a local warehouse. They look to be in good original condition in unscathed Altec gray paint. The grille cloth is too thick for me to see what drivers they contain, and there are no stickers on the backs or any other markings beyond the Altec decals. Would I be foolish to buy these without looking inside? I'm not sure the owner will allow me to dissassemble them...

Follow Ups:
Greets!A number of different 'Iconic' speakers were cobbled together over the decades to take avantage of JBL's original's 'fame' so assuming these have original components and repair parts are still available, then any of them will have a certain amount of desirability to somebody, but I certainly wouldn't pay much to see what's in them since the cabs themselves aren't worth the price of shipping except to a hardcore collector (assumes utility cab design).
If he won't let you remove the backs, then at least shine a very bright light through the grills to discern what size driver(s) are in there. Maybe you'll get enough of a reflection to see if the woofer has a HF horn (some flavor of duplex) or alum. DC (some flavor of diacone). Note that some diacone loaded speakers also have separately mounted 3000 series multicell tweeters which have diaphragms made from 'unobtainium', so caveat emptor.

I own a pair of Altec Iconics and enjoy them quite a bit.
they contain 1-15" 416-16Z woofer, with a 811 horn with 806A driver.
The 811 and 806a are extenal, not in the cab, right?

Hey Bill,
Actually they are in the cabinets, These are labled Altec Iconic but they are the same drivers and cabinets as the Altec Valencia.
