I have no frame of reference for comparing different BLH/drivers, etc., but I have been running the fe166es-r in the Fostex-recommended blh cabinets for a couple of days now. Here are a few observations from one who is hearing a single driver/BLH setup for the first time:1. I actually have a bigger sweet spot now than with my previous setup (ProAc Response 1.5s moved well out from the back wall).
2. Much "smoother" (and "clearer", acc. to my wife!) presentation overall.
3. Soundstage width is improved. Not as deep, but that always seemed a little artificial to me anyway.
4. There are some lower midrange colorations at a certain frequency. I'll experiment with different damping materials and amounts in the compression chamber.
5. Then, of course, there is the bass question. I had the ProAcs dialed in to get clean, fulsome bass in the low 30s. I'm getting low frequency "impact" with the BLHs...but they certainly don't go that low. Although this only manifests itself on certain recordings...generally, the bass is quite satisfying, especially on acoustic string bass, which sounds more "real" than I've ever heard it.
6. To all of you drumkit afficianados out there: these speakers are not only dynamic and "punchy", but there is--once and for all--a seamless transition from cymbals to snare to toms to kickdrum that is quite amazing.
These speakers aren't perfect, but I'm hearing a different dimension to music...gee, maybe I'm finally hearing the music itself. Anyhow, the cabinets were fun to build, and it'll be fun tweaking and playing around with them.
Follow Ups:
"Here are a few observations from one who is hearing a single driver/BLH setup for the first time:"Are you saying you are running the BK-16 without the tweeter? Pardon me if I am misunderstanding.

Listen a little longer and you will also notice more seamless vocals and just about everything else will begin to sound more natural and real. Wait a few weeks and go back to your ProAc's... which are already excellent... and you will begin to hear its crossover colorations. Single drivers don't do everything right but they do some critical things right other typical designs don't.
Those colorations you will try to tweak out may never completely dissappear... but you may learn to love them just the same. I really enjoy my single driver speakers... flaws and all!
Enjoy your project!

Any recommendations or advice on building the Fostex cabinet for these drivers? What kind of wood did you use? What kind of finish?
JD
I used three sheets of 3/4" birch/maple ply from Home Depot at $32.00/4'x8' sheet. I didn't want to spend a fortune on what was essentially an experiment to me. BTW, although the plywood thickness was just a "hair" over 18mm, I went with the metric plan. Close enough.I used the maple side out...looks kinda nice...especially for the price.
The finish was a gel wipe-on oil stain ("Wheat") that I had from another project. (I didn't want the wood to "yellow".) And three coats of wipe-on poly.
The cabinets aren't perfect. I mis-cut the width of the sides 5mm short. And one of the mounting holes is 1/8" larger than the other one...oops! I rounded over the vertical corners with a 3/4" round-over bit. One cabinet came out perfect, but the other one splintered a bit. But I guess that's why they make wood filler :-) But they're tight and square.
I'll use the premium baltic birch (with a little more care!) if and when I rebuild these.
