Hi, all,Here's my current configuration:
VPI TNT 3.5 turntable
JMW 12.5 tonearm
Dynavector Karat 17D2 low-output cartridge
Dynavector P-75 phone stage
Marantz 3300 preamp
Bottlehead Parabee 300B SET amps
Monitor Audio Silver Studio 8i
I only listen to vinyl. The system sounds very good. But it doesn't play loud enough. What speakers would you recommend? I need more sensitivity than 90 dB/W/m I get from the Monitor Audios. The only high efficiency speakers I've heard are some Klipsch RF series at the local Good Guys. It's so hard to evaluate speakers in one of those appliance store "listening" rooms. Actually, the RF-7 didn't sound like complete garbage. I'm a little wary of getting horn speakers. I'm worried that they'll be too bright after the initial awe of loudness. I listen to all kinds of music, and I like systems that tend toward a lush sound. Thanks,

Follow Ups:
I made 300Bs from scratch using the Parabee operating points and much of the original design. I also use a VPI turntable, the Scout.I've tried Adire Audio HE 10.1's and Klipsh Heresy I's (both on stands). I've been happy with both. The sound is not night-and-day different between the two, though there are differences. There are Adire reviews that say recessed midrange, but I don't get that. The Heresys seem a little more dynamic, but they have a treble peak around 6-8 kHz that I haven't been able to tame with the usual crossover tweaks as of yet, but I'm not done trying.
Of course, the Adires you have to build the boxes for yourself, but it's not a complicated box. The Heresy I's out there are getting pretty kicked up, so you have to do some woodworking to clean them up, if you care about that sort of thing.
I also tried the BH Straight 8s with these amps at a friend's house for two-hour demo, but they were not to my taste.

Back loaded horns can be nice if the driver cone is dense enough and the horn is large enough. I had good results with Eminence Beta 8s after trying a total of 8 different drivers, including Lowthers. They cross neatly to Selenium slot tweeters (3.5K 4th order acoustic 2nd order electrical, in phase for all transients). They are never less than 97 dB/W sensitive. I can show you pics if you email me at dayfamily6@earthlink.net.
I made these to kick butt with 2A3 amps, but have gotten 115 dB at the listening chair 10 ft away with a 50 WPC amp, just tickling the clipping LEDs.
They sound good on all music, but only Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody sounds good @ 115 dB.
(Deadly, but inadvisable.)
I love the warm sound and great detail of these horns.www.dccaudio.com

Try Zingallis. Find a pair that matches your price range and give them a listen.

There an extensive list to answer this exact question at the Welborne site:

Your assumption of the RF-7s is correct. Look elsewhere. The Zu Cable Druids are warm or the new Decware RL 3s.

Just order the Prometheus and don't look back. You get loads of dynamics with 300Bs and they will fit your taste to a T.
Those are coaxial speakers and are being manufactured agaain by Iconic Manufacturing and by Altec Pro too. Sensitivity is around 98dB/W/m and they come with a decent crossover that includes an MF/HF equalizer. Altec asks $1250 for one, Iconic sells them for less. You might want to ask the folks at the Altec User's Board. They are very knowledgeable and helpful. Link below.Manfred

We are a few weeks away from the upgraded version. The Iconic 704b. Jerry Hubbard and Jim Dickinson have cooked up an improved version of the above mentioned driver which did have some problems. Also are close to having the upgraded xover developed. We have completed design but do not have in production the upgraded xovers for the vintage 604e and 604g duplex's.

Particularly what are the improvements? Also, are you planning to release improved xovers for the 604-8K as well? I used to own a pair of 604E, but I like the 8K much better due to less "honkiness" and their extendend HF response.
You might like old altec stuff if lush is good. Much vintage stuff is voiced that way.Horns are OK. I think direct radiators are too bright.
Can't say I like the new klipsch as of yet. Various ones I've heard were shrill, edgy and grainy. Maybe they've improved. Not much competition at the good guys.
ask Dr. Bruce Edgar for suggestions - don't have his contact info - does good work and has good concepts of tradeoffs.
