Hey
I have a pair of 421-8 , a pair of 511B/808-horns , now
somebody offers me a pair of 418-8H , are they any good , how
does they sound , compared to 421's?
Do the 418-8H have Alnico-magnets?
I'm building a 5.1 homecinema system , all powered by small triodes.
I do have subwoofers , so the Altec's does'nt have to go lower than
about 60-80hz.

Hmm, what happened to my response I posted earlier?!Oh well, one more time. :^((
The 418 has a higher Fs, HF extension, 45-8kHz Vs 35-3.5kHz. The 418 has an AlNiCo motor. If XO'd at 500Hz, I imagine they will sound ~identical.
They both model ~maximally flat/half space down to 80Hz in ~4.25ft^3 cabs based on published specs, though the 418 needs to be tuned to ~60Hz, Vs the 421 at ~50Hz.
You will probably have to lower the tuning to get better in-room response, but this at least gives you a baseline WRT to comparing them, though you need to measure them for best results WRT cab volume.

I did'nt see your earlier post ,sorry!
But this one helps me a lot.
Thankyou GM.

No, I didn't mean you missed it. I sent one several hours earlier, but for some reason it didn't show up on the list. Guess it got lost in cyberspace. :^))Good luck with it, sounds like we have similar ideas as to what a HT sound system should be. Currently I have a pair of 511s/A210 (515Bs) horns for the mains, 511s/(2)421-8H surrounds (goes low enough not to need separate subs), and a pair of SD Contrabass subs for the LFE/mains. :^)) No center, as there's no room, and frankly, in my room the mains image well enough not to need one.

Hey GM
You are just right about HT!
I really would like some 515B's , but they are much more
expensive , compared to 421's :(
I bought 2 pairs of 421 for 250$
BTW..Do you have passive crossover's or active?
If passive , how are they built?Best Regards
Jan Bundgaard
Yeah, 515s are $$. I got lucky though and got eight, and the four 210 cabs they were in, two 1005/288 multicells, and the 500Hz passive XOs, for $25 decades ago when they were gutting a Cinerama Theater (cost of the rental truck to haul them away). I had to have two reconed, and all of them zapped. I use four, and keep the other four, just in case. :^))Still got two new 421-8H left over from a bunch I got at cost from a dealer closeout, if you want to call bought in '72 new (only broken in, and periodically hooked to the sig gen).
Four for $250? They go $100-150 down here in the S.E. USA.
I use Rane active 80Hz/500Hz/L-R 4th order with adjustable time delay. I'm not a passive kind of guy. :^))

Hey GM
You people in USA are just lucky! , here in Denmark(Europe)
Such Altec's are rare!
People here are focused on Yamaha , Sony etc. :(
I will use LR-Filters as well!
BTW..Do you know a horn called "University Sound Model T-50"
Should be produced by Altec , about 600hz and up?
Can you tell me something about it!
I got it for free.
Best Regards
Jan Bundgaard
Is that what's on the label? I remember T-50 being just the driver. The horn would be H....Anyway, I don't have any specs, and don't remember much about them since they weren't that popular down here. Altecs outperformed the competition, and had a very agressive marketing policy to keep from being undersold.
