hey Tom - pretty interesting stuff - some years back - 'think' BM used Sigma-type Eminence 18 - shootout FR shows a dip which would affect HD numbers - maybe these were designed by 'intuition'?Question - what T-S might the open back case "like"? - is it looking for lower mass/unit cone area?
for practical concerns - is a "good" design whatever works strongest for a given bulk? - its gotta play well, not melt-down and fit through doors - plus not kill whoever has to lift
am pretty sure if pulled back chamber on Bruce's Monolith that distortion would increase and lose some LF extension - had about 2cu.ft. annulling chamber.
will Yorkville's Bass Pipe get into sub-shoot? - looking at FR graph seems flat to ~45 - does that make it a possible contender?
Follow Ups:
Hi
I am not sure how the BM design originated, I can say that the distortion reduction when this mounting scheme is used is mostly due to that notch and the others above which combine to act as an acoustic low pass filter.
All one needs to do is make sure the F where the distance from the driver to the closed end is less than 1 / 4 wl (where the first notch is) at the desired high cutoff. So far as parameters, for a given cutoff throat area and such, the only difference is that the driver has much stiffer suspension than usual (to make up for not having a rear volume in parallel).
Practical, eh, that’s no fun.
Seriously, I would say shooting for the lowest cutoff in a given size would be one target unless there are other considerations like also making the most sound possible in a given size etc.
While not a concern for indoor hifi, a high output design insures a loafing and linear system indoors.Yorkville makes good stuff for the money and I have communicated with a couple of there engineers before and if they are representative of the rest of the people, it is a good outfit. I am not familiar with the bass pipe though and the shoot out is being set up by a Bassmaxx dealer.
Cheers,
hey Tom - sorry for disjointed stuff - got flu or something -re:Yorkville - old-school Traynor stuff including speakers = pretty hip - YBA3 had about 20uF main cap and simple grounding scheme kept it real quiet - buddya of mine built tube amp with toroids, dc on heaters and huge ground buss - hummed like a nest
Y's basspipe is priced nice atbout $700 discount - graph supplied looke Ok too with one unit doing about 105 to 45Hz - think dims are ~26x28x43.5
B-deap looks cool - easy to fit in a lotta homes
will be fun to hear about next shootout
best,
Freddy

hey Freddy..where did you get a graph for the 1208? Please paste it here...
I was really interested in this pruduct at one time, but I like the idea of Labs.....still, the pipe could be a good deal when considering the cost.

might have to ask RCA-fan's permission? - looks like winner

> what T-S might the open back case "like"?One example would be:
30Hz-200Hz
Sd:800cm^2
Re:6ohms
Athroat:160cm^2Qes:0.72
Qms:12.5
Vas:16.8L
Fs:77.5Hz
Bl:18.6Tm
Mms:224gmSystem efficiency of ~44%
interesting - St=0.2X Sd - does such a 15 exist with parameters like that one? - FWIW - B-maxx looked pretty good on shootout FR (a year or so ago Johan was working on a smaller home version - may have been custom) - hope to hear results of new comparisons
