In Reply to: You'll never get a 15" to 650Hz in a folded horn; i.e. mass roll off. (nt) posted by JLH on July 26, 2003 at 23:46:33:
think go into rolloff around 500 w. 2220H with 80sq.in. throat (haven't measured since 1992 ) - for folded would be happy with the 65Hz part and whatever can get smooth - wonder how PWK's little J horn with 'doors' would do?Best,
Follow Ups:
If you look at the 1946 PWK crossover for the Klipschorn it has a high Q section to boost the mids from the folded horn. Big caps were expensive so he did it at the plate impedance level ahead of the output transformer, and used a second small transformer for the highs. The 1976 J-horn patent also has this, as do the post 1980 versions of the AA networks for the Klipschorn/Belle/LaScala (AK, AL, AB).
In general, the higher the mass corner on the woofer, the less the x-max. I usually pick the longest x-max driver that will 'make' it to the crossover point. With a high Q crossover I can generally 'make' the crossover an octave higher than the mass corner.
Community makes what looks like two little J-horns mating on a center axis. Uses dual 12" drivers and claims to go to 70hz (24" X 24" mouth). Crosses at 600hz to a 2" throat co-axially mounted mid horn/driver, and a 1" at 4Khz. With a touch of EQ, 250hz cut, these sound very 'hi-fi'. Mainly for paging, they also can do music at reduced levels. Above 100hz they can really do it. I was using a bridged AB International amplifier rated at 2.8KW and just pouring the coal to them!

Hey Dennis - does this imply sometimes using an underdamped 2nd order lowpass on the horn's woofer? - if so maybe a general example please?

thanks DJK! - poked in corner (not in use) - still have one K-horn bottom - could run with Cobraflex & maybe 2-KSN1016A on 10W tap - 203B sticks out kinda far - mono is cool

Hey DJK - didn't know Community had hi-fi paging horn - pretty cool - are they tough to find used?for K33E - that J-horn...
Here is a pair of RS440:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=23794&item=2547125192
Here is an R2, they make about six different versions, the only difference being the pattern on the MID/HF horns. Also available in a wood box.
neat - won't ship - missing drivers - at least now know what they look like - will check out pdf - many thanks!

The ones on eBay are RS440, an old model. The pdf is of the newer R2, which looks like a fiberglass paging horn, but has dual horn-loaded 12s, an M200 2" mid, and a 1" Eminence titanium for the tweeter.
The RS440 need a pair of:
Audax PR17
Emilar EC175 diapragms
EV 15L
Four piezo motorsCall it $500 and all parts would be new.
It would probably cost $300 to have them picked up and strapped to a pallet and shipped.

Hi Freddy, wonder how PWK's little J horn with 'doors' would do?
What are you referring to? I've never seen a Klipsch designed J horn. Do you have any links or other info? I'm very curious.
look here - autoformers/doors/K33E ~66Hz flare = compact
