I just got some Aluminum diaphragms from Part Express made by Radian for my JBL 2441's with Dr. Bruce Edgar Salad Bowls.
They came with overlaid curves on top of original JBL diaphragms and they are IDENTICAL.
After installing them, they curved better than the original JBL diaphragms they replaced.
So based on that, if they make Altec replacements also, those should be even better than the originals at a lower price.
PS: I have yet to hear them because I'm in the process of building cabinets to go on top of the Bass Horns and add a missing tweeter.
But I'm confident the Radians will sound just fine based on the very smooth curves they yielded on my magnitude response test, both channels match exactly too!
Follow Ups:
I paid $100 each for mine at Parts Express. I can't imagine the Altecs are better or cheaper.
I used Radian replacement diaphragms in both Altec and JBL drivers and they're aces with me. I also think Radian drivers sound very good.
I agree. The Radian diaphragms are very good.
The Chinese knock offs are not great and the alignment holes don't match the pegs on the Altec drivers.
thanks all. very helpful info.
some people have said "Radians are almost as expensive as Altec/GPA, so you might as well get the Altecs"
what do you guys think of that? are Altecs actually superior in any way?
No listening experience, but Radian does a good job, as long as you don't use their shims.
