I am making some changes inside the cabinets on my Altec Valencias. I want to mount the 811B horn to the front of the cabinet on the top of the horn. As they come, the horns are mounted at the bottom corners only. (Flamencos are mounted by the top corners only; just the opposite.) I have made the 1" x 1.5" x 20" wooden piece to mount the horn to.
The issue is how to remove the wooden piece at the top of the photo that is too small to mount the horn to. I have unscrewed the three screws and removed three wood staples I thought were holding it in place. It appears to be glued to the front of the cabinet as well. Should I use a pry bar and tear it out or use some other method?
Sorry, photo is upside down!
Have you thought about turning it over and putting a (eg) slab of marble on what is now the top?
I just dis-assembled a pair of Altec Magnificents to repurpose for my 604s. What I found very effective to is get a steel handled putty knife, put a bit of a sharp edge on it, and carefully drive it down between the baffle and the support piece (blade face flat to the face of the baffle). The glue on mine was remarkable strong, but if you are careful, and move methodically along from one end to the other (slowly), you can probably remove it fairly well.

I think what I'd do is to (you need a table saw) take your
1 x 1.5" piece and cut an "L" into one corner down the length
to fit OVER the existing piece. Just screw it on, pre-drill
holes so it won't split....plus you can always remove it to
go back to OEM.
Probably a wise move. Will have to mark and drill for both attachment to existing piece and for threaded insert for attaching horn. Nice suggestion. Thanks!
Might be a good idea to install a support bar from top driver
stud to top of cabinet to take some load off of the front horn mount.
Approx. 1/16" x 3/4" would do it.
