Wondering about value, sound quality,I can pickup a set local in very good condition but he wants $1000 pair.Should I go for it?
Follow Ups:
Iam going to bring an amp out this weekend listen see if all is well if it is to the shop they go.
Hi Kloss,
Have you seen this?
Regards Philip
In good condition, this speaker will sound fine on most music, not just rock. Easy to listen to with a generous sweet spot. It will suffer from IM if pushed hard. Most of the ones I have seen have lived a hard life. Value is subjective, but you won't get that kind of sound or cabinet for $1k very easily.

I heard those speakers in New Orleans the year before the flooding. They were in a great Italian restaurant with pictures of Jazz greats all over the walls. Music thru them sounded great! Dynamic and alive. I walked up to them to see the model numbers. As i got closer they had a slight wizzing sound that seemed to come from the tweeter. It got me curious about compression tweeters. I wonder if this is a sonic signature for compression drivers?
Overall, they sounded excellent to me... except for the wizzing swirling tweeter sound I heard up close.
Have you listened to them?
I also have a parts list and a crossover schematic if you want to look at it. I can send you an email.

Amplifier problem or a ground loop.
I have not listened to them.Would be interested in any info you have. I searched about so have a general idea.I bet the sound you heard came from gear running the JBL I have heard such noise out of SS gear on hi-eff loudspeakers even costly SS amps have had strange noise on hi-eff some cheap ones are dead no noise at all kind of hit or miss when I try SS and Iam not saying I dont use SS kit on hi-eff I do.Bet many amp designers never bother running any hieff on SS amp designs.
JBL 4430 studio monitors are great for rock and roll and will play loudly. The upper HF of the horn is only to 16khz, but plays well enough for rock music. Efficiency is 93db/watt.
The sizzle you heard from the horn might have been a diaphram going bad as mine did not sound like that at all.
$1000 for a pair in good shape not needing refoam on the woofer and everything working as it should is a good price.
Just my 2 cents worth!
Regards, Ron
Orignal owner kept in the same home since new, foam arround woofers apears in good order. Looking for a shop loudspeaker system.Should just build a system but dont have much time.
Those would be a good home speaker, very nice for a shop.
I spend much time in my shop so might as well enjoy it;)
