how did a basshorn make it to 1K6? - I'm ignorant but that doesn't seem a normal xover point (?) was the music and other components familiar?Best,
Freddy

Sorry, the bass was carried by a 15-inch woofer, similar to the Altec 515 family.
I've had this problem myself and I found that it's caused by too much volume in the 2khz. to 4 or 5khz midrange region. It's not from horns or lack of bass. My speakers sounded supper clear ,voices ,the sounds of the guitarist fingers zipping up and down the strings going to the next note ,almost surreal. At first it sounds great, then after awhile it starts to get fatiguing. The only way to fix it is to flatten it out.
I'll bite:
From the sketchy details here's some food for thought-
1K6 is 2(+) octaves above piston behavior for a 15". Bell mode resonances, beaming and lobing are likely.
It's impossible that the DI matches between the bass and midrange (weird crap going on in the room decay).
Nothing is told about the crossover but if it's a minimalist design I'd expect 'peaking' below crossover point if the horns aren't full size (large).
From the adjective "thrilling" I assume it was loud.
My personal demon is IM, it affects my hearing quicker than other distortion (in otherwise competent designs). Bass modulating mids in the 15" is my biased guess at your buzz killer.

1k6 to 8k. Does this driver have a parallel connected Zobel fitted to tame its upper response.
Is the driver above 8k time aligned with the driver below 8k.
With a supertweeter leading you can have extreme detail but tiring listening.
Also try a damping resistor over the supertweeter say between 15R and 47R.
Cheers ........ Graham.
Thanks, I know there is perfect time alignment but I don't know the details about whether a Zobel network is used . . .
