I received these beasts in April. All I read about was the need for a very long break-in time so I threw them in a simple open baffle that matched the width of my Subwoofers (18"). I've been running the Fostex's full range with a low pass of 100 Hz to the Subwoofers. I was sure that this was a very less than ideal configuration, but it was a simple way to break in the drivers while still being able to listen. Performance has been what I expected (awful). Until last night! All I can say is that I am truly amazed at how dramatic the effect of break in has been. They have almost completely lost their "shoutiness" quality. I still plan on building a BLH or BIB but these things have REALLY opened up. I'm not using any BSC and they sound fantastic! So I reiterate for everyone using these drivers that you really need patience. Give em time!
Follow Ups:
I have a pair of FE206ES-R's in open baffles as well. I also have BLH's for them and my various Lowther's and other full/wide range drivers. My strong opinion, keep them in and work on perfecting the Fostex's in open baffles. Have fun.
So you prefer the open baffles over the BLH's? Are you using a BSC circuit?
Yeah,
It never ceases to amaze me how long it takes single drivers to fully break in...it took the Lowther DX-55's in my Third Rethms way over a year of constant use, break-in tracks, and tweaking...the little Fostex FE-103E's in my BD type TQWP about the same...but it has taken an inordinate amount of time for the Loth-X Amazes to get to the point to where they "Amaze" me....
When I first got them 5 years ago or so, I played the heck out of them out in the garage, face to face, with FM interstation noise, for over 200 hours...then brought them into the house and played them for weeks...well, they were OK, but nothing really special...
So, I played with them off and on over the past several years, leaving them in the system for a month or so, with as much time on them as possible, but never really "got" the point of them...
Until just recently, that is.....
I decided to put them into the system back in the early spring and just let them run....I use the system for both TV and audio so they get used quite a bit...
"Wow, where did that detail come from?" I asked myself when I sat down and listened to them earlier this week...listening to familiar albums that I have played over and over greeted me with new sounds and details that had previously been buried...there's still no bass, that's augmented by two subs, but everything else they do is finally what I think the little speakers are capable of doing.
I feel like the drivers now have a lot of time, how much would only be a guess, but I usually leave the stereo playing on FM during the day when I am not home...no, I don't think they get the "texture" quite as well as the Lowthers, but maybe in another six months, who knows?
.
I wouldn't have believed it but it really is true. I also play mine for TV sound so the kids give them a pretty good workout!
