I have a couple of 16 ohm 414s, and they both have a 3 to 4 db peak at 1kHz. I personally look at the response as having a 3 to 4 db dip at 700Hz or so, since the output of the driver is basically the same at 350Hz as it is at 1kHz without any strange impedance anomalies in the 1kHz area, at least for mine.

i measured JUST the 414 with my current crossover and saw exactly that (why i didn't do this before, i dunno...)-- i'm just going to drop the XO on the 414 a little, and see if it averages a little better with my horns.

  No problem! I hope it works out. When I first got my 414s, I listened to them wide open for a while, and they don't sound too bad that way. But I went for a 1.2kHz crossover anyway due to impedance wigglies at 2kHz, and because I could smooth that 1kHz area. Mine roll off on their own just fine shortly above 2kHz, however, so one of these days, I was thinking of trying them wide open again with a waveguide above.
  
  BTW, my 414s measure with surprising consistency between them for speakers that old (for any speakers, really)... Do yours have a narrower bump around 1.8kHz (or dip at 1.6kHz depending on how you look at it)?

    with the application i'm using-- i've got, what appears to me, a handoff to my horns of about 13-1500 hz. from the impedance graph i've got-- i'm thinking that whatever i calculated (which i thought was a 2nd order xo at 750 hz knee.. and isn't!)-- is pretty wrong! but in any case-- what i've measured with the crossover, it's pretty well down at 2k anyhow-- and runs at a nice, even, slow slope (and definitely NOT 12db/octave) out past 4k. this being in a homebuilt 614 utility cabinet. i haven't really noticed the bump up higher though-- next time i measure, i'll send y' some results.
    
    i've got some measuring to do to get my horns to the right..but i'm certainly thankful for the relatively good behavior of the altec! i've run mine full out a couple of times.. but integration issues, not to mention bass control, got the hated inductor back in pretty quick. even with the 'slower' bass.. the BR box i've got definitely needs that measure of control to be usable.. i use steel lam inductors.. so the DCR is low, and it sure seems to keep transients quicker.. so for the minor tradeoff.. i'm keeping them! i know some folks've posted good results.. but i've had bad experiences.
