I have a significantly modified Sony DVP 9000es DVD/SACD/CD player of superb sonic quality which is not working. I have a recent year Sony blu-ray player - a UBP-X1100es - for movies, but I am now using it for CDs and SACDs since the older 9000es Sony player is not working. The 1100es player's audio quality is decent, although not to the level of the older modified Sony player.
My question is: Is anyone modifying these more recent blu-ray/SACD/CD players?
or...
Are people simply pairing them with outboard DACs?
As a side note, I had been pairing the 1100es player with Ric Shultz's Millenium 2 DAC, but it recently stopped working too, and while the Millenium 2 DAC is very transparent, it lacks deep bass which is disappointing for movie playback, although fine for audio.
Well, I thought that I would find out what other rpeople think...

No mods here, just run the HDMI into the Onkyo 885 pre and enjoy.
So the Onkyo has a DAC?

yes, and DSD via HDMI too. Sounds very good in "direct" mode. Worse with the DSP.
Well I'm not modifying but I'm getting use from a Sony Blu Ray player. I bought one off ebay for about £30 with a 3rd party remote. It was one listed as capable of ripping SACDs. I downloaded and created a memory stick that is put in the front slot and the unit powers on. The drive opens you insert an SACD it closes then appears to shut down. But it isn't it goes into a ripping mode which is accessed from a PC across my LAN and that records the tracks from the SACD as DSS files. I then transfer them to my server and play them using LMS and a Pi with USB output to my DAC.
Works well and plays at excellent quality with none of the restrictions of SACD players.
What Sony Blu RAy player do you have?
