Did we ever need a Vinyl/belt drive vs Vinyl/direct drive?
Follow Ups:
It was only a few years ago that audiophiles would look down on direct drive turntables [ like the Technics SL-1200 series ]. Now we see several 'high end' audiophile TT manufacturers making direct drive models.
I've always said that anyone with some decent tools in their garage could make a nice belt drive TT. There's not a lot of technology behind it compared to the electronics needed for a good direct drive system. Just my 2-cents worth.

you employ an external power supply like the Phoenix Eagle used with my VPI Scout to finely regulate the speed.
Which also serves to obviate the need for moving belt to different sized pulleys when changing speeds.
