Dumb question but.... Are the DSD downloads the same resolution (and presumably the same sonic quality) as the SACD discs?
Follow Ups:
So, yes, many DSD (DSF) downloads are DSD 64 - the same res as that on SACD's. However, some downloads are available at DSD 128, DSD 256, and there are now a few at DSD 512 (2Ch only - no MCh at this level of resolution). As the DSD sampling rate doubles each time, it allows the DSD noise (from the noise shaping) to be pushed up into the next higher (inaudible!) octave. I have some DSD 256 downloads and, although I may be drinking the Kool-Aid, I do think they sound better, lacking the "softness" of some regular DSD 64 recordings. The nice thing about the Native DSD site is that, for each release, they will tell you the actual resolution of the master file, so you can make your decision about which incarnation to download accordingly.
Thanks Chris. I've had a few DSD 64 (and SACD's) that I thought were a little "soft".
I have no experience beyond DSD 128 but in comparing these two albums in both formats, I find the PCM version to be a little more lively.
