SACD is limited to DSD64. However, I've found DSD128 and DSD256 sound better than DSD64. Consequently, I buy the higher resolution DSD recordings and use a DAC capable of playing native DSD. I ripped all my SACDs to DSD64 so I can play everything from my hard drive using JRiver streaming software. I have a Mytek Brooklyn Bridge DAC and I also have two different FiiO portable DSD players.
Follow Ups:
I'm curious about how a tune was taken from the master tape and placed in a DSD 128 or 264 file? Which record companies do this?
In what file type/rez is the master tape info stored?
Can we expect many recordings to make it to our systems so unadulterated?
Do you know how to conduct a Google search on the internet? Search for "Native DSD" and you will find hi-rez DSD albums for sale.
Have you heard of a TASCAM DA-3000 DSD recorder ? I own one of these and I make DSD128 copies of my favorite LPs. The TASCAM DA-3000 DSD recorder is easy to buy if you have $900. Therefore, anyone who can afford a TASCAM DA-3000 can make DSD128 digital recordings.
Good luck,
John Elison
I have some samples in DSD128 and DSD 256 and they do sound really good. I've never owned a SACD so I can't compare to that, but it sounds ever so slightly better than 24/192. I also have some DXD and that sounds really good too. I can't say that I like the music though.
I wouldn't listen to 16/44.1 if I could help it, but there is no avoiding it. Mostly 24/44.1 through 24/192 since that's what Qobuz has.
Playing right now is Joan Jett and the Blackhearts doing "Crimson and Clover" in 16/44.

Are you saying the differences between DSD & 24/192 are minor?
"'Cause when love is gone, there's always justice./And when justice is gone, there's always force./And when force is gone, there's always Mom. Hi Mom!" Laurie Anderson, "O Superman (For Massenet)"
I feel like DSD sounds slightly better than PCM, but I've never taken a double blind ABX test. Initially I noticed the difference when I replaced my Alesis Masterlink with a TASCAM DA-3000 DSD recorder. I had been making 24/96 digital copies of my LPs with the Masterlink and I thought they were perfect. However, after hearing my first DSD128 copy of vinyl, my reaction was, "Wow! That's even more perfect!"
I now own a number of Native DSD256 recordings and again I feel like they sound better than hi-rez PCM. I also feel like DSD256 sounds better than DSD64. However, I don't know whether or not I can prove it.
Best regards,
John Elison

How do you define "minor" in this case?
"'Cause when love is gone, there's always justice./And when justice is gone, there's always force./And when force is gone, there's always Mom. Hi Mom!" Laurie Anderson, "O Superman (For Massenet)"
it is up to you to do that, if you choose. Alternatively, it might be part of the response from the person you addressed with "Are you saying the differences between DSD & 24/192 are minor?"
That said, I believe that there aren't MAJOR differences and that is a good thing because, for the most part, we do not get to choose a format for most performances.
I upgraded from an Alesis Masterlink ML-9600 digital recorder to a TASCAM DA-3000 DSD recorder several years ago and I now copy vinyl in DSD128. I think it sounds noticeably better than 24/96 PCM. All my DACs and digital players support up to DSD256. The only SACD player I've ever owned is my Oppo BDP-105D Blu-Ray Disc Player, which doesn't necessarily sound that good compared to my other DACs. However, I've kind of fallen in love with DSD and the higher resolution DSD seems to sound slightly better to me than DSD64.
If you're looking for an autonomous DSD player that's not too expensive, check out the FiiO M11 Pro . It supports DSD256 directly from a plug-in memory card so you don't need a computer streamer. I also own the newer FiiO M15 , which sounds just a little better, but not much. It costs twice as much as the M11 Pro, though.
Best regards,
John Elison
