Just an In-Joke.
Feel free to ignore.
That's not too far off the mark! For the 95 minutes of the album, the session spanned four days at an average of 5 hours every day. Actually, the first day with the alto and choruses, it was closer to 7 hours. Then they played the same program, plus a Mendelssohn "Italian" that night. Couldn't do that in the USA!
Since storage is cheap now, the recorders run almost constantly, with media markers used to denote Take numbers. All told, there's something in the neighborhood of 15 hours of recorded Mahler 3 music, with three complete takes of each movement, plus numerous patches. The offstage posthorn player nearly needed to be carried out of the hall one night.
It would be different here, you're right.
I wonder if Fisher is King of the Orchestra, not just Music Director!
I'll bet he works them hard, touring and recording so much.
But I'm glad they are.
Recording can be a real Grind, and very tiring.
They probably took that guy directly to Intensive Care. ( I hope...)
