I never understood her critics. I think she's great. Not everything she does is a home-run, but I like the fact that she is pushing her limits. Her voice is so layered and unique. And the combination of her voice and her playing the Hammond is butter!
Anyway... Will check out her new one.
One of my favorites is "New York City" which she is featured on... it is actually "The Peter Malick Group." Probably her most rocking work. Think Steely Dan but more earthy.

Hi Lokie,
I ask this in sincerity. Could you point me to a track of hers you find is multi-layered?
When I listen I think it's too simple and lacks texture, and that the music around it doesn't help. Still, I like it now and then. :)
However, I know speakers a lot more than I know singing and music, so any insight you can shed on what I'm missing would be appreciated.
Best,
Erik
I never said her music was layered, I said her voice was layered.
Here's a duet w Bonnie Raitt. Bonnie, by most people, is considered a wonderful singer. She has soul, range, great tone etc...
But when I hear Norah she just stands out with more of everything. More soul, more range and her tone is just superb. Her low notes are smokey and rich and her high notes are pure, clean and effortless.
Lots of great singers but it's the last bit of authentic unforced emotion that makes them really special. I think she has that. And I especially appreciate when she is accompanying herself w the organ or piano. The combination is just a coherent bundle of artistic richness. Here's a video of a Bob Dylan cover, "Forever Young" that exemplifies her emotional quotient.
I know this all subjective and I don't expect everyone to have good taste.

Great performance. BTW - love the DVD of the BR show.
..."I know speakers a lot more than I know singing and music.."One of the most tragic posts I have ever seen.
So I guess music is something you have to suffer with as you "listen" to the sounds your system makes. The indignity. :)

Not at all. I listen to music all the time but I don't know what I'm listening to. I just enjoy it. :)
My one music theory class was about classical, not jazz or folk. :)
So when some one makes a statement about music or a voice I don't understand I ask for more information.
Best,
Erik
I hear ya, but it is far easier to understand music, which I believe to be an innate ability then speakers or digital audio. And far more rewarding.
It really is remarkable how clueless her "fans" are. Well, so called fans. Her true fans are along for the ride. Her evolution has been nothing short of brilliant. Little Broken Hearts is a modern eclectro pop masterpiece.
She was NEVER meant to be audiophile dreck..this happened because of the audiophiles who don't know music from sound..they were happy to have "female vocals" with which to "evaluate" their systems with.
She was NEVER a part of that whole female faux jazz group. From the beginning, when I first saw her in clubs in NYC before she had a record deal and was recording modest demos, she played country, punk, alternative rock, and obscure covers. For those who wanted her to record her debut album 6 more times, it shows exactly where their mentality is.
Sorry, had to get that off my chest!
