Thanks! I just placed an order for one based on your review. I've enjoyed the DSD nano for the last year and look forward to something a little different.

I've had this DAC in the system for a couple of days now. It was a nice experience but the DAC is being returned. I've compared it against vinyl copies of recordings and the ifi Nano DSD DAC. To my ears in my system the Modi is very detailed and extracts more than I thought was there. Unfortunately it never takes time to breath. There isn't room or space between notes as if there is a level control and everything is evened out and the info around the notes is missing. My wife and I find it exhausting to listen to.
I'll probably try one of their high end DAC's in the future but for now, we are happy with the little Nano for everyday digital.
Thank you again for posting the initial review.
My experience with the DAC isn't anything like you described. My system can sound very relaxed or the opposite depending on file content.
Perhaps you got used to not hearing everything and expected to have it sound the same? Its an upgrade problem I've run into before.
Sometimes a new component will reveal content you never heard prior to its introduction. Many times the problem is not the new component but in your software.
I have made changes in the past where favorite LPs lost some of their attraction. I could have blamed the component but the truth really was the LP. It wasn't as good as I thought.
When more resolution is added to a system this can happen.
Or maybe it just some weird synergy thing.
