available on SACD? There are many recordings of the Paris Symphonies available on PCM, but I am unaware of any that have come out on SACD.
As always, I am as interested in outstanding sonics as I am in quality performances.
Thanks, Pete
Follow Ups:
based on the input obtained on this post plus reviews published in Gramaphon and in the Guardian. Two have arrived and have been auditioned. The third has been shipped (from Japan). Here is the breakout:
RECEIVED
1. Haydn Symphonies Nos. 82 - 87 (Paris Symphonies) recorded by Ansermet and the Orch. of Swiss Romande. They were originally recorded in 1962 and recently reissued by Decca. The performances are excellent and the sonics above average for a 50 year old, two channel stereo recording.
2. Haydn Symphonies Nos. 78 - 81 recorded recently on SACD by Ottavio Dantone and the Accademia Bizantina, also released by Decca. Like the Ansermet recordings, the performances are robust and sharp, and the sonics of this recent effort are first rate.
IN TRANSIT
3. Haydn Symphonies Nos. 87 - 72 recorded by Simon Rattle and the Berlin
Philharmonic Orch. and released as a limited edition. I had mixed emotions about this one, particularly given its $53 price tag, but a pair of positive reviews in the trade press broke the tie. An I must admit that I am a "completest", so this will round out my collection of hi-rez (first class PCM in one case) versions of Haydn's late Symphonies. As I indicated in my original post, I recently purchased the last of four discs recorded by Bruno Weil on Ars, completing his traversal of the London Symphonies (first rate) on SACD.
Thanks for all your inputs.

This is an SACD?
Not an SACD in the UK, it is Decca CD 4788837.

My favorite is Kuijken and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

It looks as if there's a Japanese Rattle/BPO set of symphonies 88-92, which is close, but no cigar.
If you're interested in "golden age" stereo recordings on plain old CD, there's an Ansermet set available which I have and can vouch for:
Thanks for you feedback. As you might guess, I am trying to fill out my high rez collection with late Haydn Symphonies that are well recorded and have superior sonics. This project was triggered when I completed acquisition of the Haydn London Symphonies (Nos. 93 - 104) with the purchase of the fourth volume of Bruno Weil's excellent traversal on the German label Ars (SACD). Your suggestions have helped me make my selections for other late Haydn. The following are the discs I have just ordered:
1. Dantone's recent SACD release of Haydn's Symphonies Nos. 78 - 81.
2. Ansermet's stereo CD of the Paris Symphonies (Nos. 82 -87).
The Japanese Rattle/BPO SACD set containing Symphonies Nos. 88 - 92 is expensive. Do you have an opinion as to the quality of the performance and more particularly the sonics?
Thanks again.
Pete
I have become a great lover of Haydn as the miles on my odometer increase.
My perspective is Mch recordings. I do not listen to or buy stereo recordings. But, like many other gaping holes in the available SACD repertoire, Haydn is still quite incompletely served. As others have said, I do not think the Paris Symphonies are well served at all.
I think I have all the available Haydn Symphony Mch SACDs, and my absolute favorite is the one at the link provided by Manfred Huss and the Haydn Sinfonietta Wien on BIS. Not from the Paris or London sets, but still worthwhile, and it is a terrific performance and recording.
I have not heard the Rattle set that I mentioned, in either its plain old CD or its Japanese SACD incarnation, so I can't say. Some of Rattle's older Haydn performances (with the CBSO) were pretty uninfected by HIP (e.g., Symphony No. 22, etc.), but he may have changed his approach (as Abbado did) in his more recent performances.
recorded on hi-rez. I know nothing about the Rattle/BPO Sym. 88 - 92, either on RBCD or the recent Japanese release on SACD/BluRay. Has anyone heard the Rattle recording in either format? Are there any reviews in the audio press of the Rattle version in either format?
Thanks, Pete
I don't think he liked it.... :)
I don't believe that there's any recording of the Paris Symphonies available on SACD.
If you can find Bruggen's set on Phlips, that would be my choice. If you want a larger, modern orchestra, Bernstein on Sony. Karajan's set is surprisingly good, except for the sluggish minuets.
