I am missing the SACD.net forum already. We need to attract people back to the Asylum, since it's really the only place left to chat about SACD. Should start up some new or old threads to get people conversing again...Have I mentioned recently that I wonder what happened to good ol' ZS KEKL?

Yes I agree I also miss SACD.net and I have absolutely no interest in the new site which is a total waste of time.
I agree diw.
I suspect there are issues involved other than musical appreciation and criticism.
The new site is different, for sure, and perhaps you're simply averse to changes. I still see value in it. I do not miss the illiterate, inaccurate reviews posted voluntarily by users. Some of the reissued junk they reviewed was awful when it was initially released, and I can't imagine anyone whose opinion I value interested in purchasing it in hi-rez at double or triple the price and then being objective about its merits.
The new site still offers a yes/no opportunity to recommend specific offerings and comment on reviews, and I believe those are both useful options.
Some of the reviewers are more sophisticated than others, but at least one can establish a baseline with which to weed out the real dogs without spending $15 or more.
Peace,
Tom E
The issue is that there is no more interactive easy to read/participate forum.
The issue is the site owner is a vindictive jerk (kind words) who was petty in all his interactions and stalked people around the net while emailing them with threats.
The other issue was that there were both newsworthy and important announcements and conversation going on back and forth. Bissie's thread and Channel's thread, for one, as well as many others that should never have been deleted because of his attitude that it veered from his views. I've never seen a more vindictive site owner in all the years I have been on forums.
Seems like you have other issues.
Oh, please. I was on that forum for years and saw my share of people coming and going all that time. Stephen Best has problems and most people who have left either voluntarily or involuntarily know it.
Also, I do have a problem with internet stalking and that is something he practiced often. I would get emails from the man complaining about my comments here, for example.
When it comes to talking about upcoming SACDs, there are various other places, but the person who owns that other site clearly has cut off his nose to spite his face. Mr. Best, is perhaps the worst "proponent" of Hi-rez. He's quick to be offended and stalks people around the web when he feels crossed.
Get the personalities out of it. There's much to be said, reported, etc., about upcoming releases, some of which aren't reported by that other site.
There is obviously no love lost between you Dutchman and Stephen. In this case, I mostly agree with you. The new site is very dry, and I don't think that the official reviews or even the comments will stir the interest in SACD that is needed. I can search for SACD on Amazon or other sites, sort by release date, and I have the most current information on what SACDs I can purchase. So the new site, other than for keeping a library of all my purchased SACDs, is of much less use to me than the old one.
I suggest the folks who do frequent the Asylum start threads here on new SACD releases or other topics of interest, to get the folks who used to post at the SACD.net forum to move over here.
Almost all are PCM recordings that are available to download, and playback as DSD, 2x DSD and even 4x DSD.
Multi Ch is also available to download.
I almost never use my Sony 5400 anymore.
You wouldn't say that if you had a Modwrighted 5400:)
David
I would never use anything else until 5400es becomes unrepairable, absolutely no downloading or ripping for me.
Did you buy a backup laser assembly? $50 for a genuine Sony replacement...if you wait to long they will only be available aftermarket and those suck and are unreliable!
David
Likely you got lots of stuff I'd like.
No.
I wish I could get the Files off them with my Mac, tho, would be happy to share.
when the old firmware would let you rip them. :-(
I bought one a couple of years ago for this purpose but I just baought another about a month or so ago. Not a problem if you really want one.
Yup, my first one failed unrepairably recently after a few years of heavy ripping. I bought another from the same guy you did. So far, so good. I do have a second one still in use after a couple of years.
But, sooner or later, supplies will dry up. Those early machines with SACD and version 3.55 of the OS are not built all that well. Hopefully, we will see Mr. Wicked's purpose-built SACD ripper sometime in the near future. But, it seems he has taken on a difficult project to design and build it.
Yes, I am on-board with that new ripper project but the real reason for the 2nd PS3 (and I might buy another) is that I run the two in parallel to halve the time it will take me to finish (if I ever finish) ripping.
I bought mine in April of '08 for the SACD ability, but have never gotten into ripping. I've hardly used it for games, or ripping and I've only watched a few Blu-Rays on it, but mine still works well and has little hours on it.
Sometimes the processor loses its cooling ability and people fix them by reapplying the Artic compound, from what I've read.
What are used ones selling for, if mine is the 'good' version to have?
Thanks, Chris
The "launch" PS3 (60GB version, it should be the same with the 20GB one) and the slightly newer first version of 80GB (AFAIK there are late production 80GB PS3 consoles that can't play SACD) are the only one that have SACD capability. You also need to make sure the firmware is older than v3.55 such that you can install the hacked firmware and the SACD ripper app. And if you do have one of these be careful not to upgrade the firmware accidentally.
Mine has been hacked with the SACD ripper but I tried not to use it too often - the fan kicks into high gear ~5 min. into ripping! I guess it is time to reapply the cooling compound between the CPU and the fan.
I agree with your comments entirely.
