Has anyone compared these 2 players? They are in the same budget price range for around $150. I've heard the CE595 keeps the DSD intact unlike the 970 that converts to PCM. Will the 595 have an edge for SACD / redbook audio playback over the Oppo? Thanks!

At this price/quality range I do not think that you will notice much of a difference between DSD vs PCM. That said Oppo is a real fine player for the price once they eliminate that one second pause issue.

Oppo has had a beta firmware fix for the SACD pause bug for several months now. I downloaded and installed same on my 970 w/o any problems. It works and only takes a few minutes.

I can't say whether or not you could hear the difference between SACDs converted to PCM on the Oppo and native DSD processed SACDs on the Sony, but I can say that the difference between SACDs and RBCDs on my Sony 595 is enormous. I can also clearly hear the difference between SACDs sourced from PCM, DSD, and analog.

Sorry, I missed that bit. Could you explain please?

It will pause for 1 second between tracks on SACD. You don't want that to happen on a classical SACD.

Sounds like what the Toshiba 3990 does with cd's. Same complaint re classical.

I talked to Oppo about the pause and the currently available beta firmware, my question was when would Oppo take care of this as I do not want to mess around with the firmware, they told me roughly in about two months. I will wait and buy mine when this isuue is resolved.

All I had to do was burn a CD-R from the .iso image, pop that CD in the player, wait a few seconds, take it out of the tray when it popped out. Done. All total, it took maybe 10 minutes, with 8 of those minutes for the download/burn.

I ordered a 970 and the delivery won't happen until mid to late March. So I suppose the bug will be fixed by then.

I just bought a refurb 970 direct from Oppo for $119, delivery
took around 4 days. Looks like and performs as new.
