Thanks again, KA1. Sadly, my friend is really cash-strapped (I feel guilty about introducing him to SACD, as a matter of fact) and that's why I'm looking for a solution that I can organise myself. I have worked out quite a lot of the circuit myself already. It's finding a suitable infrared decoder to do what I want that's the problem at the moment. I'll look into that Sony TA-P9000ES and see what it's like.

Follow Ups:
I've been to the Stereophile website (after doing a Google search) and read the various comments (including yours Kal) about the unit. Unless the various level adjustments are right at the start of the audio chain, I'm concerned that the input sensitivity is such that Ian (my friend) would be no better off with that than he is at present with his Technics amp. The price would mean that it's over a grand here and that would be beyond his means at the moment.

First, they are discontinued and go for about half now. Second, why not simply put an attenuator in the output of the offending player? Frankly, I've NEVER had this problem with MCH players. What's up with that amp?
I know what you mean -- and it's a question that has been bothering me as well. When I first heard the system, a year or so ago, I couldn't believe what I was hearing (it was, of course, just a standard CD set-up for audio) because the sound seemed so distorted on occasions and Ian didn't seem to be bothered by it. There were other times when it sounded reasonable, even quite good, but the only occasion where I would really call the sound high quailty was the time I took up my modified XB940 (to VSE level 3 at that stage, with low output), a locally made high-quality preamp (with an external power supply that I made up because the original had somehow been lost before the present owner, who has loaned it to me longterm, bought it second-hand) and two enormous class-A amplifiers I've made myself and it was all hooked up to Ian's best B & Ws -- and showed just what they could sound like with some really good SACDs! It was that demonstration that got Ian interested in the format.
What amazes me is how the suppliers whom he bought the original system off could have sold it to him with the level disparity that exists. It's also hard to see why Technics should make an amplifier with that sort of input sensitivity but it is quite an old unit now, I believe.
I'm not sure where Ian goes from here.

I haven't spoken to him since late last week and he hadn't picked up the CD595 at that stage becase it hadn't come down from Auckland. I will be seeing him this coming Wednesday (for a computer club committee meeting) so I shall ask him for a progress report.
I really doubt he would consider puchasing a new amplifier at something in the order of $1500.00

Ian picked up his new CE595 yesterday and it seems he's happy to have a purely passive switchbox, so that's what I'll make him -- with single log pots for levels.
