As the owner of an XA-777ES for several months now, I would not leave that off your list . . . although you'd be doing well to bring one in at under $1k (I paid more).
I'm not the least bit interested in multichannel and have been very pleased with its performance as a 2-channel machine. There were some logic issues, that apparently were characteristic of this production run, but Sony fixed them under warranty. In addition, Sony has a very reasonable flat-rate repair (a few hundred $$$) IIRC for this machine.
I have not heard of the sled motor mechanical issues that affect the SCD-1 and SCD-777ES, which share the same transport. The XA-777ES has a different transport.

Current used price for the SCD-XA777ES seems to be around $1100 to $1200 on Audiogon (8/10 condition or better). Any unit being sold under a grand is probably either incomplete (missing original box, manual and/or remote) or has some cosmetic flaws.

Bruce, thanks for pointing out the SCD vs. XA models. I had glossed over that difference. I just saw "777" and ignored the rest.
