It would be totally irresponsible for Stereophile to report heresay. One thing though. When I read Consumer Reports they report repair rates for major brands, so that if I am considering buying a dishwasher I can compare the relative reapir rates of Maytag to Kenmore.
I imagine that this sort of thing is simply too difficult to track for hi-end audio. So my question is, as a consumer is there any way to get any reliable information about product reliability, or is hi-end audio basically a "you pays your money and you takes your chances" proposition? Any insight you might have would be appreciated.

Follow Ups:
I do not know of any reliable sources of repair/defect rate statistics. I imagine that they would have to come from the manufacturer. For a small industry with small players, like high-end audio, it is unlikely that the companies would provide the data or be compelled by the FTC to do so. Too bad.
