"Chris, can you recommend to me a CD only player in the under $1K price class that will out perform my SACD 1000 on CD and sound better on CD than the Philips does on SACD?"Nope - I don't get out much and I haven't heard your SACD player either; it may be twice as good as the SACD players I've heard with CD so any comment I make would be speculation.
If you're happy with it my opinion shouldn't be worth Jack to you personally anyway, and if I WERE you I'd be considering Alex's mods as unless he's surrounded himself with sycophants it appears he's got a decent product.
"I auditioned a number of CD and SACD players under $1K and the Philips was tops on both CD and SACD. But maybe I missed something."
Maybe you did and maybe you didn't - it depends on which players you auditioned.
Of the more affordable units I've heard they've always been in friend's systems or at shows, but the Heart CDPs in particular are superb IMO."Unfortunately I am not a millionare and do not have $10K to shell out for top of the line Audio Note stuff."
Save up, have your player modded and enjoy the music.
Follow Ups:
to have Alex mod the machine. But not until the warranty runs out. As it is I think the player sounds great.

I haven't heard his player so how can I recommend a better CD player?I have heard more expensive SACD players which many consider to have excellent CD replay but which I don't although they are very good.
Many who once believed that the SCD-777ES provided CD replay up with the best have since bought a sub $200 DAC however and considered this to be better - the same DAC that was compared to the cheapest Audi Note DAC (to be fair still way more than the Art DAC) over at Enjoythemusic.com and as expected it's limitations were revealed.
Like I said, if the stock SACD1000 is far, far better at CD replay than the SCD-777ES then it's a decent player, but even if it isn't the reports of Alex's mods - and finally the availability of a fix for it's gremlins - makes the player well worth owning and if IU was in the US I'd seriously consider using one as a transport for my own DAC (providing the digital-out could be installed) whereupon I'd invest in the odd SACD title.
Best Regards,
Chris redmond.
