Hello AA members!
Recently I have discovered House music and have fallen deeply in love with what I have heard so far. I've never been into this type of music in the past so come to this genre of music with no real understanding about it. I've been watching youtube videos of Frankie Knuckles performances at various clubs, and absolutely LOVE what I'm hearing.
Yet at the same time, I just do not understand what in fact he (or any DJ) is doing at the table. The comments to these videos speak of how this performance is "legendary" and how Frankie is "playing his heart out" or something like that. But what is he doing? Frankie isn't playing the bass, isn't singing the vocals, isn't playing the keyboards.
Could someone help me understand what it is that these DJ's are doing when they are at the table? All I see are seemingly random knob twiddling. How is this performing?
Absolutely NO disrespect intended. I love this music and need to understand it better so that I can appreciate the DJ's for what they do.
Thank you AA community!!

Take a look at St. Germain- the first two albums - Tourist and Boulevard-
Cool stuff and an interesting mix of old and new-
As Bullethead said - the art of the DJ is that of the Bartender- to mix the usual (and at times the UNusual) in a new way/recipe that is interesting, engaging and compelling-
Happy Listening
it is like playing an instrument. blending the different tracks (and external sound effects) together, either with mixing vinyl between usually two platters, or with some sort of digital mixing equipment.
the artform lies in the mixing that the DJs do, technically they can build up the music into a "peak" and get the crowd going. sometimes this in done consistently with each track, or for a more powerful experience in the middle of the session, it is unbelievable really.
I am a big fan of Richie Hawtin, although that's more IDM than house but it is really good. Or should I say great ;)
Check out something called "deep house" for a sub genre of house music, is is excellent. There's Acid house as well as ambient house which I love. It is and there is no limit to this stuff.
There is a song in this Frankie Knuckle set that I just love called Bring Me Joy.
I looked up the actual song by the Layabouts and it sounds 99% like what is heard when Frankie Knuckles "plays" it.
So I just dont get what he does in this case. There must be something really subtle, but it all escapes me.
Minute 47 of this set.
