Thanks for all the help. I made a choice. I got a Mytek Brooklyn DAC +
First impression. More spacious sound stage. Much improved base. Better definition in the mid range and upper mid range.
I am going to have to try the mods to the 800's and I am looking for a balanced cable.
Follow Ups:
The other night I tried the Brooklyn headphone amp: bland, dull, thoroughly unpleasant, unlike what comes out of the speakers. I'm hoping a little break in will do the trick. More to come...
I bought the Brooklyn Bridge a few months ago and it's definitely the best sounding DAC I've ever owned. However, shortly after I bought the Brooklyn Bridge, FiiO introduced the M11 Pro portable digital player and I bought one of those, too. I was very surprised to discover that the FiiO M11 Pro sounds just as good in my system as the Mytek Brooklyn Bridge. I wish I had discovered the FiiO M11 Pro before buying the Brooklyn Bridge because I could have saved a whole lot of money.
I chose the Brooklyn Bridge because of its capability to play digital files directly from a USB flash drive. Unfortunately, I found out after buying it that it will play only PCM files from the flash drive. I still need to connect a computer streamer to play DSD files. Furthermore, the flash drive playback capability is kind of sketchy. It fails quite often requiring me to restart the MControl application on my smartphone to keep it playing. It works much better with streaming services like TIDAL and QOBUZ, though.
Anyway, the FiiO M11 Pro plays all types and resolutions of digital files directly from a plugin micro SD card and it also streams TIDAL, QOBUZ, and all the other streaming services. It basically does everything the Brooklyn Bridge does and sounds as good or better, too. Like I said, I wish I had discovered the FiiO M11 Pro before buying the Brooklyn Bridge because I could have saved a whole lot of money.
On the other hand, they're both excellent digital players/streamers and I'm completely satisfied with my digital system today and probably well into the future.
Best regards,
John Elison
John,
I've read your posts with great interest, and I thank you for your insight. Ultimately, however, I am confused. Is the Brooklyn your favorite sounding DAC or is it the FiiO? You seem to be equivocating.
They both sound equally good to me. They don't sound the same, but they both impress me equally relative to sound quality. I would be completely happy with the FiiO M11 Pro if I didn't have the Brooklyn Bridge. In fact, I now find myself playing the FiiO three or four times as often as I play the Brooklyn Bridge because the FiiO is so much more convenient compared to the Brooklyn Bridge. I just hate having to connect my computer to the Brooklyn Bridge, so I use the FiiO for DSD almost exclusively. Of course, the FiiO is not a preamp and doesn't have an analog input, so if you need a preamp/streamer/digital player, you'll have to buy the Brooklyn Bridge. However, if only need a streamer/digital player, the FiiO is the way to go. It sounds as good to me as the Brooklyn Bridge and costs $2350 less.
Good luck,
John Elison
Thanks for your response. Yeah, I had a case of audio nervosa there for a second. I would really like to know if anyone around here has compared the Mytek Brooklyn DAC + with the Manhattan, particularly if the Brooklyn has a linear power supply. There's about a $3,000 difference between the two, so maybe the Brooklyn is a better deal after all. And maybe I wouldn't even hear the difference unless I were to upgrade my speakers. I'm dreaming of the Sonner Audio Unum Allegros, if anybody is familiar with them.
Both the Brooklyn DAC + and the Brooklyn Bridge have inputs on the back for connecting a 12-VDC power supply. I'm thinking of trying mine with a 12-volt battery and see if it sounds better or different. I haven't done it yet, but I'll let you know how it sounds when I do.
Best regards,
John Elison
I will probably order an LPS in the near future, so if I do, I'll let you know how it sounds. Unfortunately, however, I won't have onhand a Manhattan to compare.
What is an LPS?
Linear power supply. If I'm not mistaken, it's DC power.
Oh, thanks. I thought you might be referring to a brand name.
I just bought the same DAC, and I'm very impressed by it. I also own the Sennheiser 800s and will in the short-term test it out with the DAC. You've got to love the vibrance and excitement that this DAC offers without ever becoming fatiguing.
Have you considered upgrading the power supply to linear, such as offered by UptoneAudio.com? It's on my list of things to upgrade.
DO you have to 800 or the 800s?
I got some Dekoni Audio EPZ-HD800-HYB Elite Hybrid Ear Pads. Very nice addition.
Yes I have thought of a power supply. I am going to try it with a battery initially then build a power supply.
I work in the aerospace electronics business and a colleague is designing a power supply for my Pass Pearl II phono preamp. I will just build another one for the Brooklyn DAC +. I just need to find a case
I will also build a Pass DIY preamp for my Pass Labs X250.5 and will build a power supply for that too.
The DC ripple of the power supply will be in the microvolts. The output can be varied to work for the different applications by selecting a few different resistor values. The circuit board will be the same for each.
I own the regular 800; the "s" was to pluralize it.
You seem to have a good handle on upgrading. If you have any other ideas, please share them!
And happy listening!
