I still have a set of HD600s. Every serious headphone listener should have one for a baseline to judge other newer designs. I have had mine for at least 20 years. I have changed ear pads and other parts over time. I have used the famous Surf Blue Cardas cable and now it has a Toxic Silver Poison cable that is much more supple. The 598 is a nice set of headphones for a normal person, but an HD 600 is an audiophiles headphone.
Follow Ups:
My HD600s recently broke after many years (the right driver stopped working, the headband pads were flattened). Sennheiser offers a flat-fee repair service on this model for $140 that includes 2-way shipping via UPS. They specify that it will take longer if you want your specific set of cans to be sent back; they may choose to send a new or refurbished set.
About two weeks after I dropped my broken headphones off in a box at UPS, Sennheiser had delivered a brand-new set, complete with fancy packaging (sturdy hinged box with foamed compartment). Great service!
The pads on my HD580s and HD600s had flattened out over 20 or so years of use. I was about to think about replacing them, when I found these on Amazon. They fit perfectly.
