I really like them. They have to be broken in though. Put a cd on repeat for at least 72 hrs. Before break in, they sound bass heavy and dark. They also respond well to a cable upgrade. They are semi-open back, but unless you really crank them, anyone sitting nearby won't hear them.
Very comfortable. I compared them to much more expensive Sennheisers, and chose the Nighthawks.
I was slightly dismayed to see the price reduction, because I just bought mine this summer. But I think they were a good deal even at full price. $350 is crazy cheap for this level of sound.
Hope this helps.
I think they would certainly be an upgrade to the HD-600, which I feel still to be a great set of cans.
There's no way the NightHawks are an upgrade from the HD 600's as I've listened to the former extensively and own the latter. The HD 600's are more tonally balanced than the NightHawks through the midbass, midrange, and treble. They also don't exhibit the treble issues of the HD 800. Granted, they don't sound as resolving and spacious as the HD 800 (or HD 800 S) and lack deep bass extension.
Unless you need the sensitivity or like the colored sound that the NightHawks offer, for $350 you could purchase the HD 650 or join the HD 6XX Massdrop for $199.
I have not listened to the Nighthawks but, from what I've heard and read about them, they do not unseat the HD600, HD650, and HiFiMan HE400S as price class leaders.
The Nighthawks outshine the Senns in the looks and build quality departments, IMO. At the current sale price they would seem to be a bargain.
HD 800s. Too bright and hard, although certainly detailed.
I can't even deal with what audiophiles like to call 'detailed', ie. Delta Sigma type DACs.
Do like the 'natural' sound of the new HiFi Man HE-1000 V 2.
$3000 is a bit much.
