Sony MDR 7520 Professional - $290 from Amazon or B&H photoHad these about 3 weeks, and they are great!
Very smooth and natural, detailed sound. Very good low distortion bass.
High output and low power consumption for phone use. and better on laptops with higher quality music.
Frequency response from very low bass to 80Khz.
A five star phone IMO!

Only $300 and classified as portables, yet hooked up into a dedicated amp they sound incredible.

I have not heard the new B & O's. I hope they are as good as you say. That said (based on the headphones I've heard so far), I'm guessing that the author of that list has pretty strange head shape proportions and a preference for forward treble presentation.

I only have old Stax sr34, and Sennheiser HD 598SE, to compare them to. And to my ears, they are more immediate, without being harsh. Sennheiser are excellent, but little bit too subdued and now I prefer them for HT listening exclusively. In comfort department Sennheiser is winner hands down. Also since they are "portable" B&O provides only one 1.2 M cable...while Sen. had them both,1.2 and 3m - at half price of B&O. figure that? I had to order 3M separately from another maker.
I wish I have other 'cans' to compare them to...so, Marco's website is practical reference point.
You are blowing smoke IMO!
and to be fair, with so many great choices out there it is all but impossible not blow smoke. Few, if any, have heard them all.
So far my favorite set of cans is the Focal Spirit Classic. Not particularly comfortable, plenty of detail but the tonal colors are just unparalleled.
But I haven't heard any of the higher end sony headphones.

He specifically mentioned this model. But because it's not a very popular model among audiophiles at this point in time, very few of us have had access to an audition.
I've read mixed reviews.
All audio equipment has "mixed" reviews! YMMV - as everyone says!

But for some reason, other headphones with mixed reviews have risen in popularity while Sony's headphones have not - or, at least not outside of pro sound circles. Audiophiles seem to have their own peculiar set of standards.Audiophiles can also be a funny bunch. They sometimes like to play "Monkey see Monkey do" a bit too much...
I try to keep my ears and mind open.

I didn't notice he was the original poster. I thought he was a reply to the original post suggesting the sony headphones.

I will try to audition them and if I do I'll tell you what I think about them...
Thanks.
Available at Monoprice - Planar headphones for $299.00
They list for $999.00, but usually go for about $700 or so. Extremely smooth, well extended system. If you a bass headphone kind of person, these may not for you, but they do go deep, just not head thumping. You can here things you never heard before.
Still the deal of the century IMNSHO.
Have tried a lot of $500 and up to $1K headphone and always end up going back. Granted I use mine with an after-market balanced headphone cable, but still.
These still get head time while T1's, HE500's and LCD-2's sulk.

I have had the Sennheiser 650's,700,800 and the Beyer T1 V1. They were all fine with the receivers I was using, then went to an Ember headphone amp and things started to sort themselves out. When I purchased a Feliks Audio Elise headphone tube amp, with 6 Philips El3n's, it all became much clearer. Have sold off the 650.700 and the Beyer T1 went back as it had the left driver problem. Kept the Senn 800, with this amp they are top notch. Clarity, and sound stage are the best I have heard, so far.
They are now going under $1k.

I agree that the Sennheiser HD600's are the deal of the century. I initially found them dark and muddy when powered by my receiver's headphone jack. I sold them to a friend. I then bought a headphone amp the HD650's. I liked the 650's with the amp but weren't listening to them much, so I sold them for about6 $20 less than I paid.
Then I asked my friend if I could try the 600s I'd sold to him with my amp. They sounded great, so I bought them back for what he'd paid me for them. Then I bought a Burson amp. I love this combo, and I'm sticking with it.
HD580 becomes beautifully improved once the foam mod is done, and one can order the HD600 outside grills for them, which will make them look great. Very economical way to go if one can find some HD580's on the net..
I used to own the HD580. The new grills alone make it sound identical to a stock HD600. The foam mods make it sound like something different.
To each his own, but I prefer them with the stock foam. However, I do agree that the HD580 with new metal grills looks killer - better looking than the 600 or the 650 IMO.
Opinions vary on removing the foam behind the driver. Removing the foam between the driver and the ear didn't improve things for you?

Made by some guy in the UK?
Custom Cans maybe?
Different but equally viable.I would agree that the HD-600 is one of the best headphone designs of all time, for the money. The only thing I don't like about the HD600 is the faux-marble finish. I prefer the look of the older HD580 or even the HD650.

never wear them outside..

When you are listening to the HD 600s you can't see the marble finish :-)
I may not always see the faux-marble finish but I'm pretty sure that it affects the sound somehow. Haven't you heard that everything affects the sound somehow?
Besides, marble is for floors and countertops.
you want to look cheaply klassy.

Different sound, but many people like them.
I do not!
Thanks, I'll have to try those when I get a chance. Being a "pro" headphone I would guess that they are durable and at least fairly comfortable too.
