I recently bought the Viso and I love them but can not stop thinking about the open air qualities that (I read) the HD600's have. Is this the only advantage?
I can still return the Viso but I do not want to buy the HD600s unless there is a good chance I will keep them.
I know the chances are slim that many have heard both but,
I wonder how glorious the HD600 mids really are...
anyone?
Follow Ups:
I loved my HD600s for years, always preferring them to the Grados and AKGs I eventually sold (the Grados for their extreme discomfort, the AKGs for too light and airy a presentation). The 600s were so comfortable they could be worn for almost two hours--my limit on phones--but frankly, I've always found the midrange a bit recessed, which is why I experimented. Deep, taught bass, however.
If you don't have to go sealed, I'd go with the Senns any day of the week.
Well, audition the 650s too, some prefer those...

I use a pair of 650's, and senn 700's and the hp-50 Visio, and the hp-50 sound good. Compared to the 650,700, they are not in the same game. The hp -50's are 32 ohm and even my phone will play nice thru these. The 650's are 300 ohm and the 700's are 150 and really can use the power, of a dedicated amp. Using the Ember with dual 6J5's and they are excellent. The more the 700's break in the better I like them and the 650's are getting less and less head time. For portable the hp-50's are great, travel they fold flat. For long listening times, I use mine minimum 3 hours at a time, the 700's are very comfortable, but the 650's are the best for comfort. If you want to stay with Sennheiser for closed I had a pair of 380hd's for a couple of years, my boss is still using today. Close to the 650's sound in closed back.

I don't know what the headphone amp on your Outlaw amp is like, but I'm very happy listening to classical music on the HD-600s with a Burson HA-160 amp or the headphone jack on my Marantz CD-5004 CD player. The Senns were mnuddy and dull with lesser amplification (a midrange Denon receiver).
I use hd 650 with ifi ican
wonderful sound
I just satisfied my curiosity trying the Outlaw (which had plenty of power for speakers, obviously that does not help the headphone section...)
I'm quite fond of my HD600s and have not been tempted to replace them.
I have, however, replaced the cable with one from Cardas, which made a
noticable improvement in sound quality. Galen Carol Audio had the best
price for said cable when I bought mine.
needed more length, bought an 18 foot Cardas cable...noticeable improvement
in other words I am not going to try it.
this is what they said:
The HD600s are rated at 300 ohms and 97dB/mW. The headphone amp of the RR2150 will give you some decent volume with these but I would not recommend trying to drive anything with a greater impedance or less sensitivity than the HD600s.
you guys are great!
Those are my two main pair of 'phones.
The Sennheisers are fussy to drive; I have finally settled on a Schiit Valhalla that I'm satisfied with, but I went through a lot of amps. OTL seems the way to go.
The NADs are so much less picky.
But for serious listening sessions, I go with the HD600s, while for daily listening I like the NADs, although they do look funny on the street.
And yes, the mids are great.

it sounds quite good though...
thanks your experience really helps!
I only care to use the HD-600 with the main system. My current fave otherwise is a rather inexpensive headphone with great mids.
If you're happy, why change it?
a my receiver then I will not go that route. The bottom line for me is that I can get a full refund on the Viso and buy the HD600's now instead of buying them in the future and eating the price of the Viso.
Fwiw Stereophile said the HD600 sounds good with a mid price receiver so I am still kicking it around.
Who knows?....

That depends on the receiver. With my Denon 3805, the 600s were clearly underpowered. The sound was quite thin. With my current Denon receiver (x4000), the 600s are listenable and not thin, but I still prefer how they sound with my headphone amp (Burson HA-160).
True. My old NAD 304 really couldn't drive them, not could my Antique Sound Labs amp.
However, my Adcom GFP-555 (original) does a pretty good job.
