I recently got a pair of the Hifiman HE1000 beta for testing and listening. I would say without reservation that they compare to the best there is and I was shocked at how different they sound, all in a good way. Extremely effortless and not difficult to drive. As a planar headphone, they have, IMO, bridged the gap between dynamic and electrostatic in speed, resolution, soundstage and solid bass.
If you have a chance, they are worth a listen. I am using a Richard Marsh DIY amp for most of my listening.
Source is the Chord Hugo to my DIY headphone amp using 16/44 to DSD. edit: the stock cable is great but the Whiplash silver or gold plated silver is even better. Changing cables is very easy as they use a 2.5mm TRS for the connector.

Despite the implications that these are easier to drive than their previous flagship, I am certain that the amplification makes a big difference. I'd be careful about plunking down this type of cash without hooking them up to the amplifier of your choice.
Observe, before you think. Think before you open your yap. Act on the basis of experience.
I am using three different amps to work the review. I have the Liquid Gold, Burson Virtuoso and the Rogue Magnum Cronus 11 in the listening studio and will be writing a full review on these babies. They are awesome headphones for sure!
Frank, you might want to try an SET amp, like the DNA Stratus.I suspect the Liquid Gold will sound the best, although it's far from my cup of tea.

Have you had a chance to compare them to HD800's?

but in reading those that do have them and compare, the detail is right there but less clinical, more natural and flowing on the HE1000.
I am using some Whiplash silver cable and the 3D type of sound is engrossing. Everything in the frequency range is fleshed out. The combination is unlike any headphones I have ever heard, or speakers. They are not euphonic but seem to defy the constraints of what has come before. Something that has to be heard.
Some of this may sound like hype so I would suggest anyone wanting to step up in sound just listen to these.
