Everyone,
I am looking at getting in to headphone audio. I originally thought of going straight to the higher end of headphones. Now I am thinking of a more modest start. I see a lot of people here like the Momentum headphones. The old version is on Amazon for about $179 and the Momentum 2 sells for about $350. I would appreciate any insight anyone has regarding the difference in the two headphones and which is the better value.
Thanks
Hujo

Definitely the Momentum...with its price now, really much more of a bargain than the second generation.
Now that the original Momentum circumaural is available at closeout pricing it is definitely one of the best bargains in headphones today. So long as your ears are small to medium sized, that is...
I just got a pair of the original "on ear" Momentum for use at work. The closed ear design is a must to block out noisy cow orkers. Had them on mostly since 9am this morning. Comfortable, great fit for me (normal ear size I'd guess).
They have great bass and really nice smooth mids. The highs are not as extended and "airy" as I remember past Sennheiser's being (HD Series), but the closed ear design and the newness probably have a lot to do with the top end.
Did anyone else notice a change in their phones as the break in?
.
Fit and comfort are very important aspects of headphone listening so it's simply not worth getting headphones that do not fit properly. If your ear size is even slightly larger than average, the older Momentum 1.0 over ears model may not fit over your ears as intended. The original Momentum was designed to be as compact as possible, but unfortunately this decision left large-eared listeners in the lurch. Before buying the older Momentums, make sure that you can return them for refund if they do not fit you.
The Momentum 2.0 folds up more tightly and compactly than the original does, so the slight increase in earcup size does not hinder it's portability. Also, if you wait a while, the "street price" for the 2.0 version is likely to dip below $300.

Good observation. I paid pretty much full price ($349) on the Sennheiser Momentum 2 when they first appeared on Amazon. They'll probably drop in price once all the original Momentums are purged from various sales channels.
I never owned the original Momentums but the Momentum 2 fit me perfectly and I have average sized ears. The cans may be bigger than the original Momentum but they're still a close fit. Big ears might still be a problem with these headphones. Being a closed design they sound 'immediate' with deep rich bass and they keep ambient noise out. I wear them in my home office if my wife has the TV blasting in the family room or if she decides to vacuum the house. My ears get a bit warm with extended listening so I have to take them off for a 'breather' now and then.
On the other hand the open back Grados sound more 'spacious' and transparent to me, less bass, and my ears never get warm because the open back and foam ear pads keep the air circulating. But they do not block ambient noise.
Agree about the sonic diffs between open and closed cans. Only top of the line sealed cans compete with open-backed cans for transparency of sound.
I also agree that the level of coolness and comfort provided by a nice, lightweight pair of open-backed headphones or earspeakers is unmatched. I really miss my old AKG K-1000s for the "all day long" listening comfort they provided. The next big breakthrough will be when air-conditioned sealed headphones finally come to market...
