I'm looking at something in the $40-50 range for my son. He uses them mostly at the gym with his iPhone, so durability is important. However, he also loses them, so cost is a factor.
Sennheiser gets decent ratings. Any other suggestions?

Those happen to fit right in the middle of my budget.
What are your thoughts on the SQ?

Great for the price and likely applications. The tonal balance is distinctly to the warm side of neutral. Bass extension is excellent. Compared to my 5x the price B&W C5s, the midrange is a bit congested, and there isn't as much top end air. I find it easy to get a good fit, which is key.

I use Etymotic MC5 earphones, currently $59 on Amazon. Really better sound quality than necessary for use with an iPhone at the gym, though that is one of my uses.
When I was looking for some ear buds for use during exercise one of my primary concern was their ability to stay in the ear during exercise.I settled on "Yurbuds Ironman". They have an earpiece that is formed to so as to keep it in the ear. They come in a variety of price levels. I suspect $40-$50 is one of them.

I don't like in ear headphones because I find them uncomfortable for over a half hour. But when I have to use them I have found the JVC Marshmallows with Comply tips to have acceptable sound at a cheap price.
