Compared to the Orpheus......Geez I just looked up the Orpheus and it's up to $16K now. I remember when it was a $10K setup. And of course I'm kidding about the Stax being junk. Just wanted a provocative subject line.

.., at least according to pro reviewer Thomas J. Norton. The Orpheus certainly wasn't a terrible headphone, but for the price Sennheiser was asking it should have been much better than Stax...

and unless you have heard them in a good system, you haven't heard them.

I agree. I admit that I have not personally auditioned the Orpheus system or any of Sennheiser's electrostatic headphones. I did listen to the old Stax Lambdas on one occasion but I've never directly compared the Sennheisers and the Stax models.
That said, I would imagine that the HE-90 headphones would never sound better than when paired with the matching Orpheus system tube amp, as reviewed by Norton.
is beautiful but from reading, requires an update to sound as good as some newer amps. Recapping and a few other changes.

Thru Monday.
Only $3750!
Recurring nightmare - I pay $3750 for this and another two grand for an amp.
Then I find out I prefer my HD800's with my tube amp.

I guess you're either a 'stat guy, or you're not. Some people swear by them and believe that the high cost of owning and operating them is fully justified. Some claim that the HD800 produces an even better "soundstage" than the Stax 009 does. Others seem to prefer the 009 for imaging and soundstaging.
