For long term listening indoors, especially.
Follow Ups:
Of those I've tried the HD600 were the most comfortable - I used to fall asleep in them!
But I preferred the sound of the AKG 702s so they're the only ones I have now :)
Regards,
Vlad.
I'm still loving my Sennheiser HD-280s. Good sounding (note I didn't say INCREDIBLE) cans that I have never found to be fatiguing physically or sonically (unless the source is crappy).
I still use them for on-site Foley and ADR monitoring as well as in studio.

most comfortable I've had on are my current fav's the AT ATH AD700's.It's not even close! Your comfort may vary as heads vary.
I've owned D5000's and D7000's. They are very hard to beat in the comfort dept.
My first cans were AKG K701's. They are pretty well known for their lack of comfort. The beads on the inside of the headband cause pressure on your head. They're tight and clamp onto your head.
My Stax SR-507's are very lightweight and also very comfortable.
But for comfort nothing beats the Denon's, in my book.

The AT's are supposed to be extremely comfortable having no "headband".
They are very good headphones.
Opinions will vary on sound quality (I prefer the Denon sound by a wide margin, but that's a personal thing).
But in the comfort dept they are not in the same league as the Denons.
The material on the earcups is much more comfortable on the Denons. And they fit over your ear really nicely. The ATH-1000X's sat right on top of the ear (much smaller cup) which was a little uncomfortable for me.

Did you get your back from Lawton yet and what mods did you go for. I really would be nervous spending that kind of dough but I am tempted to get the cups a few times. Then I can always go back to stock if I diod not like the sound. I really have never modded any of my gear.
I just did the basic mod, nothing expensive. I'm very skeptical about replacing expensive wooden cups with other expensive wooden cups.
It was hard to find a good price on D7000's. The deal I got from Mark for new D7000's with the basic mod was pretty good, so I figured why not just buy from him.
I've had D5000's that he did the basic mod to and I was pleased with that.

I know what you mean. I am pretty happy with them stock and really see no reason to mod them except some of the cups are pretty. The wire IMO is a complete waste of money as the stock cable is so good. I did wire swaps with the LCD2 and fund the stock was as good as three or four times more expensive wire. Hell pure copper is pure copper.
Do you know anything about this guy's work? I like the prettiness.

I also sold Marty a pair of Fostex TP50. he a good dude.
He supposed to be good and he delivers the product. Stay away from a guy called Bilavideo they are going to get him locked up soon as he has headphones and money and does not deliver.
depends on head size

Oops, I should have known.

X2 add the T1 and Denon D7000
Obviously, I haven't tried EVERY headphone, or even many. However, I found that the Sennheiser HD600 and 650 gripped by temples and TMJ so tighly that it was excruciating to wear them for long. I got AKG K702 phones to replace them. They don't squeeze my jaw, they are lighter, and the foam earpads breathe. Some people are bothered by plastic bumps inside the headband--I don't even notice them, and I'm bald.
If I have to watch TV in off-hours so as to not wake people up, I use Sennheiser PK100 v.2 phones. They are VERY light. The earpieces are small enough that you can recline in a chair without bumping the earpads. They have very clear sound, decent bass (but a little too much midbass) and are an easy load for a headphone jack.
BTW, I couldn't tolerate putting in-ear-monitors in my ear canals for more than a couple of minutes, so I got Yuin PK2 earbuds for iphone/ipod use. Good value for the money.
Contrary to your experience I find the HD600s very comfortable.
But I expect it depends on the shape of the skull and the duration of the listening.
They are very comfortable, but tend to overheat my ears in summer after maybe 1 - 2 hours.
Cheers,
John K
I also think the HD600's feel very comfortable. I might listen to these when I lie down to go to sleep...
