I have a pair of Mr. Speakers Alpha Dogs on the way. Also An Astell&kerns ak100. Will I be able to drive the phones with the AK100 or will I need an amplifier? Would the Schiit Lyr be a good joice with these phones. I am new to all this so I need advice

I'm not familiar with your headphones, but I have the Schiit Lyr and use it for my Audeze LCD-3. Very happy. It can drive pretty much anything.
...I forgot to mention in my posting below that as you seem to be a tube oriented enthusiast there are tube or tube equipment manufacturer's portable headphone amps too. See the URL. I can't vouch for the piece and it isn't be-tubed but it looks interesting, comes from a tube enthusiast mfg.and is an example to show you what is out there. Also look at, say, Ray Samuels products.

The Alpha Dogs have a decent enough sensitivity (97dB@1mW) and this is coupled with a low impedence of 50 ohms. So a portable source has a good chance of driving them. in fact this is confirmed by the review in 6 Moons where the reviewer says that they are loud enough driven with an AK100.
If you did decide that you needed an amplifier then you won't want a mains powered one like the Schiit for your dialysis sessions. You need to look at portable headphone amps such as those from HeadRoom and elsewhere.
I hope that you like the cans. Let me/us know how you get on as you have whetted my interest in buying a pair.
