I had a 650 and now have a 600--both of these needed a separate amp. They sounded very thin from the headphone jack on my receiver but great with a headphone amp.
Follow Ups:
I don't like a lot of bass so if thin means less bass, I'm fine with that.
It was the midrange on the 650 and 600 that was thin using the receiver's headphone jack. There was plenty of bass, but it was muddy and poorly controlled. These problems improved significantly when I bought a separate amp (Headroom MicroAmp), and they disappeared completely when I bought an even better amp (Bryston HA-160).
